Adna triumphs over PWV, keeps three-peat dreams alive

YAKIMA — The chance at history for the Adna High School softball team remained intact on Saturday morning.

Behind a seven-run top of the sixth  with all of the damage coming with two outs, the third-seeded Pirates upended second-seeded Pe Ell/Willapa Valley 13-8 in the Class 2B state semifinals at the Gateway Sports Complex.

It puts Adna (20-6) a win away from  the first back-to-back-to-back state championships in 2B history. It faces top-seeded Freeman, who triumphed over Toledo 11-1 in five innings, on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Lena McCloskey ripped a go-ahead two-run single to put Adna ahead for good at 9-8. Gaby Guard and Danika Hallom added run-scoring hits and the seventh error by the Titans capped the frame.

Eighth grade southpaw Teagan Baggenstos, who pitched just once in the postseason, came on in relief and five innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts.

Adna grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the first thanks to RBI singles by Danika Hallom, Brytin Dollarhyde and Avery Lafontaine. PWV started its rally with two in the first then a five-run second.

Jillian Hodel tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run double and Karli Phelps put the Titans in front with an RBI single. CJ Sipp added two more on a base hit up the middle.

In the other semifinal, the Riverhawks never got the offense flowing  and left a handful of runners on base in the run-rule setback. Freeman, in its first season in 2B, broke the game open with four runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings.

An error and a single ended the game early for the Scotties.
