Just four practices was all the Pirates had prior to Friday’s season-opener, but they didn’t miss a beat in routing the Cardinals 74-30 in a C2BL contest in Adna. The amount of practices was due to the football team playing deep into November.

Trevin Salme led the way with a game-high 19 points while Kaden Richardson added 16 and Grayson Humphrey chipped in 11. Adna (1-0) jumped out of the gates with the first seven points within the opening two minutes and never looked back.

It unleashed a running clock for the entire second half.

“Effort and energy and that is our culture,” Pirates head coach Luke Salme. “This is a group that has played quite a bit of basketball. I wasn’t nervous; I knew if we worked really hard and we’re great teammates to one another, things usually pan out for us.”

Winlock was paced by Freddy Patching’s 11 points while Carter Svenson and Arean Thapa each scored six. The Cardinals (1-1) will trek to Columbia Adventist on Saturday night while Adna will visit Toutle Lake on Tuesday.
