Adna Holds On, Forces Split With Toledo

A day after a low-scoring pitchers’ duel went to extra innings between Toledo and Adna, the two sides went back at it in Cheese Town with a lot more offense, a lot more runs, and a lot more errors in a back-and-forth 9-7 win for the Pirates.

The result moves Adna back into a tie with Toledo atop the Central 2B League standings, with six league games left for both teams.

Just six of the 16 runs scored Thursday were charged as earned to the pitchers, with the Pirates committing three errors and the Riverhawks coming down with five of their own. Toledo scored its seven runs on three hits, taking advantage of nine free passes.

The Pirates jumped out to a 7-2 lead after posting a five-spot in the top of the fourth. After an error and a walk put runners on and a sacrifice bunt moved them up, Avery Manning drove both home on a 2-RBI double. Another error moved Manning to third, and he scored on a Luke Mohney single. A passed ball scored another run, and Tristan Percival doubled home the fifth of the frame.

As soon as Adna got its lead, it started to lose it. Toledo scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Danner Hoinowski replaced Asher Guerrero on the mound but immediately ran into control problems, and after the Riverhawks scored three in the inning to cut the lead to one, the Pirates brought Guerrero back in to finish things off.

Guerrero ended up with three runs allowed (none earned) on two hits in six innings for the win. Gavin Frewing took the loss for Toledo after allowing two runs (one earned) in long relief.

Manning added a walk to his final line at the plate, finishing 1 for 3. Reid Caviness and Owen Fagerness joined Manning and Percival with doubles for Adna, while Zane Ranney had one for Toledo as part of a 2-for-3 afternoon.

Adna will host Morton-White Pass on Saturday, while Toledo will get a doubleheader against Kalama.
