Every team wants to start the season off on the right foot. In the Oakville boys basketball team’s season opener against Crescent on Tuesday, the Acorns trailed by 12 just minutes into the game.
They settled in however, tying it before the break before eventually ending up with a 63-60 win to start the season 1-0.
“This was an exciting way to start our season,” Oakville coach Franklin Johnson said. “Our guys showed a lot of grit and fight.”
Koner Burnett hit three three-pointers in the first half to help get the Acorns back in it, and Lewis Koser did the heavy lifting in the second half by scoring 20 of his game-high 24 points. Burnett finished with 10.
Gio Rodas logged 13 points, while Daniel Rodas and Lamont Roane both finished with six.
“We had guys step up in the right moments and that is the culture we are working to build here at Oakville,” Johnson said. “I’m excited to see what is next for our guys and what challenges we will overcome.”
The Acorns (1-0) will take the court at home for the first time this season on Thursday, when they host North Beach in their home opener.
