Aberdeen City Councilmember Kevin Moynihan is the first challenger to materialize for a state representative seat currently held by Washington state GOP Chair and state Rep. Jim Walsh, R-Aberdeen.
Moynihan announced his campaign to become a representative for the state’s 19th Legislative District on Thursday. The city councilor is running as a Democrat.
In the Thursday announcement, Moynihan stated he would run his campaign on a platform of lowering costs for working families, rebuilding the state’s coastal economy, bolstering public schools and highlighting accountability in Olympia.
The announcement specifically lists goals to lower prescription drug prices, expand affordable childcare and housing, and invest in infrastructure and training relevant to the region’s biggest industries like forestry and fishing. The campaign also highlighted a desire to promote clean energy manufacturing.
“On the Aberdeen City Council, Moynihan has focused on strengthening infrastructure, supporting economic development, and ensuring that local government is responsive to the people it serves,” the campaign wrote.
The campaign also criticized Walsh, the incumbent, for his comments on controversial national issues, stating he has “prioritized partisan politics and national culture-war battles over delivering tangible results.”
“Our district deserves more than political grandstanding,” Moynihan said. “It’s time for a state representative who actually shows up, listens, and fights for us.”
According to the announcement, Moynihan’s campaign committee, Elect Kevin for LD 19, is currently organizing volunteers and “building grassroots support across the district.”
