For years, diehard fans of “The Goonies” have yearned for a sequel, and now it’s finally happening. Entertainment Weekly reports that a sequel to the 1985 movie is “officially in the works at Warner Bros.,” as confirmed by a representative from the studio.

That sound you’re hearing? “Goonies” fans shouting, “Never say die!”

The Entertainment Weekly story goes on to say that the sequel’s producers include “Goonies” veteran Chis Columbus, who wrote the script for the original movie, based on a story by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg was an executive producer of the 1985 movie, and is on board for the sequel.

“The Goonies” was filmed in the Astoria area, and the Oregon coastal town has been a favorite with fans ever since, with Gooniacs visiting the house where some of the movie’s main characters lived, and other sites.

News of a sequel to the adventure tale about a group of Astoria kids, who go on a treasure hunt to try and save their neighborhood from greedy developers, is especially timely. This years marks the 40th anniversary of “The Goonies,” which will be celebrated this year at the annual “Goonies Weekend” event, June 5-8, in Astoria.

There aren’t many more details known about the sequel, including whether members of the original cast — which included Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton and Kerri Green — may participate.

No director has yet been announced for the sequel. The script will be written by Potsy Ponciroli.
