Portland police have arrested a man suspected of stabbing and robbing a 77-year-old man Thursday morning in a restroom at a Southeast Portland grocery store.
The Portland Police Bureau said officers responded to a report of a stabbing at a grocery store in the 3500 block of Southeast 122nd Avenue at about 10 a.m. There is a Safeway on that block.
Police said the victim was transported to a hospital with serious knife wounds, but that his injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening.
Police used witness accounts and TriMet security footage to locate and arrest Christopher E. Woods, 51, of Portland about an hour and a half after the stabbing. Woods was booked on charges of assault and robbery in the first degree, police said.
The suspect and victim did not appear to know each other, according to police.
Woods was previously convicted of unlawful use of a weapon and attempt to commit assault in the first degree for the 2017 stabbing of a woman at the Lloyd Center/Northeast 11th Avenue MAX platform. He was sentenced to six years in prison.
Police are continuing to investigate Thursday’s stabbing and are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to e-mail crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov, attn: Major Crimes Unit, and reference case number 26-352.
