2B District 4 Volleyball Roundup: Adna goes back-to-back

Posted

The Adna volleyball team won its second straight district title on Saturday night, topping Mossyrock in four sets to go back-to-back.

It’s the second time in the last 15 years that the Pirates have won back-to-back district titles, as they also did it in 2010 and 2011. It’s also the second time in school history that they will enter the state tournament unbeaten, something they did last fall.

On Saturday in Raymond, Kendall Humphrey and Danika Hallom had 17 digs and 14 kills each, while Humphrey added eight blocks and five aces and Hallom added three blocks.

Gaby Guard finished with 40 assists and 10 digs, while Karsyn Freeman tallied 21 digs, 10 kills, and a pair of blocks.

Bailey Chapman led the defensive effort at the net with nine blocks, and Jaylee Humphrey and McKenna Torrey finished with 10 digs each.

At 19-0, the Pirates will likely enter the state tournament as the top seed for the second year in a row, and they’ll be hoping to top their fifth-place finish that they achieved in 2022 and 2023.

Mossyrock (12-6) will play in the 2B State Tournament for the first time since 2019, but the Vikings are no stranger to Yakima.

They’ve finished in the top three at state in each of the last seven state tournaments, including four at 2B from 2016 to 2019.

Both Adna and Mossyrock will learn their seed and opponent on Sunday.

Rainier takes two to finish third

The Rainier Mountaineers swept Toutle Lake and Forks on Saturday in Raymond to punch their state ticket and finish third in the district tournament.

It’ll be the Mountaineers' second straight trip to Yakima. Last season, the Mountaineers upset Adna in the quarterfinals and eventually finished fourth, their highest placing in school history.

Rainier (17-4) will also learn its seeding and first-round opponent on Sunday. The 2B State Volleyball Tournament begins Wednesday.

Onalaska eliminated by Forks

Onalaska’s season came to an end early Saturday afternoon in Raymond, as the Loggers were eliminated from the district tournament in a four-set loss to Forks, which took the district’s final state tournament spot.

“This match will leave a bitter taste with us until next season,” Onalaska coach Susan Gordon said. “It will serve as the fuel we need to stay hungry and work harder to accomplish our goals next year.”

Emalie Jacoby led the way with 30 digs and 20 kills, and Capri McGraw added 18 digs. Faith Hammer added six kills, while Aliana Morales and Maleah Stewart combined for five aces.

The Loggers finish their season 14-7, but have no seniors (or even juniors), so everyone should be back next fall, including Jacoby, who earned first-team all-league honors.
