2A Girls Tennis: Three Area Tennis Players Advance to Districts

Posted

W.F. West’s Claire Kuykendall and Centralia’s doubles duo of Maddie Corwin and Maya O’Dell are all advancing to districts after each placed second at the sub-district tournament on Wednesday.

Claire fell to Tumwater’s Abby Bond, 2-6, 2-6, in the singles final.

“Claire played pretty well,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “She went out and played aggressive and had nice points. She had several good rallies. Her goal today was to not play tentatively, and she did a good job doing that.”

Corwin and O’Dell were defeated by Black Hills’ Athena Moore and Sienna Moore in the doubles final, 6-4, 6-2.

Centralia’s Liza Hopkins placed third in singles, but only the top two singles and doubles finishers moved on to districts. Black Hills won districts as a team and Centralia placed second.

Overall, the team did well,” Centralia coach Deb Keahey said. “All the hard work the girls have put in and the lessons learned throughout the season certainly paid off.  I'm proud of all our girls, not just for the great tennis, but for their great camaraderie.

“These girls truly enjoy playing the game of tennis and, more importantly, they are just girls of good character.”

The district tourney is set for 3 p.m., Friday, at Black Hills High School.
