Sophomore scoring machine Cameron Sheets added two more goals and an assist to her resume as W.F. West shutout Rochester 5-0 on senior night for the Bearcats Friday. The win gives the Bearcats their third in a row and they improve to 6-1 on the season.
“It was a pretty good senior night for us,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said.
Sheets scored her first goal in the 16th minute off a free kick with an assist from senior Anna Van Der Pluijm. Senior Lauren Tornow scored on a header from a corner kick by Sheets to make it 2-0 at the half.
Sheets scored her second goal in the 48th minute, unassisted, while senior Madi Mencke knocked one through the net in the 65th minute on an assist from Van Der Pluijm. Taylor Isom closed out the scoring in the 67th minute on an assist from Zoe Robertson.
“I’ve got a lot of seniors,” Anderson said. “Tonight was their best team performance of the season. Really happy for the girls.
W.F. West seniors playing their final night at Bearcat stadium include Madi Mencke, Brianna Powe, Kelly Robertson, Bella Landers, Cassie Schilter, Lauren Toenow, Tizzie Zylstra and Jaylene Hernandez.
“We’re going to miss this group after this season,” Anderson said. “The majority have been with me since freshman year. This is the biggest senior class in my 15 years coaching.”
W.F. West, which is currently in second place in the 2A Evergreen Conference behind undefeated Tumwater, travels to Black Hills on Friday, with a season-finale matchup with Tumwater looming on Friday.
Rochester drops to 1-7 overall and is on a four-game losing streak after beating Centralia 3-2 on Feb. 23. The Warriors host Tumwater on Tuesday. Warrior Sophie Sand was Rochester’s Woman of the Match.
“West is relentless,” Rochester coach Ken Matthews said. “We talk about applying that kind of pressure form our forwards, but they are on you in a heartbeat everywhere. That, and the fact they pass and find open players, proved too much for us tonight.”
