Natalie Eklund scored a team-high 17 points, but the Bearcats weren’t able to knock off Evergreen 2A Conference-leading Tumwater in a 77-70 loss on Wednesday in a girls golf match at Newaukum Valley Golf Course.

Eklund, a freshman, shot a 52 during the match, which was scored using the Stableford system. Her round included a birdie on the par-3 No. 7 hole, on Newaukum’s West course, that landed about six inches from the pin.

Makenna Klovdahl scored 16 for W.F. West, while Hayden Cabe added 14. Laney Barker tallied 12 points and Joy Stafford chipped in 11.

“That was our best score of the year so far,” W.F. West coach Matt Klovdahl pointed out. “We’ve made some steady improvement.”

Caari Little led Tumwater with 21 points.

W.F. West (3-2) is currently in third place in the EvCo, and finishes the season on Wednesday with a match against Rocester at Newaukaum.

Warriors Fall on the Road

Despite a couple strong performances, Rochester was unable to overcome Shelton on the road Wednesday in a 73-57 loss in 2A EvCo play.

Amerika Jones scored a season-high 15 points for the Warriors, while teammate Izzy Masias scored a season-high 14 points.

“It was our best match of the year,” Rochester coach Brian Keese said. “We really pushed each other.”

But Rochester couldn’t match Shelton’s dynamic duo of Kate O’Keese and Kaia Johnson. O’Keese was match medalist with 22 points, while Johnson followed up with 20 points.

Rochester hosts Black Hills at Riverside Golf Course Monday in the Warriors’ season finale. Districts is set for May 5-6 at Tumwater Valley Golf Club.
