At least 10 people were injured in a multicar crash in Vancouver on Wednesday, police said. A driver fled the scene on foot and was later found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police received a call about around 5:15 p.m. about a crash at Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard and 160th Avenue after a pickup truck ran a red light and hit multiple cars, The Vancouver Police Department said in a statement.
At least 10 people were injured in the crash — two of them with serious injuries. The impact ejected one person from the car they were in, police said.
The driver of the truck fled the scene, running into the nearby apartment complex where he lived in the 17700 block of Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard, according to the statement.
Police learned that the man likely had a gun and so called in a SWAT team to find him.
After receiving no response while trying to contact him in his apartment, police sent in a drone to survey the residence, and it spotted him lying motionless on the floor, police said.
SWAT medics breached the apartment and found him dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police did not publicly identify the man who died.
The previous day saw another crash in Vancouver that claimed a life.
Around 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday, police received a call that a van had hit a bicyclist near Northeast 49th Street and 127th Avenue, the Vancouver Police Department said in a separate statement.
Witnesses saw the victim riding westbound in the bike lane on Northeast 49th Street when the eastbound van made a left turn in front of the cyclist and hit him, police said.
When officers arrived at the scene, bystanders were giving CPR to the man who had been hit, and emergency responders drove the man to a hospital, where he later died.
Police said that the driver of the van stayed at the scene and didn’t appear to be impaired, police said.
Officials have not released the name of the victim or the driver.
The Vancouver Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating both crashes.
