Chehalis Middle School students have been busy this summer, participating in a Summer Math Academy that combines mathematics concepts with art, coding and nature. The free learning experience is open to all 2018-19 Chehalis Middle School students. Each module has a theme and culminates with a field trip to a location related to that theme.

Module 1 had an art theme and took place from July 9 to 11, and wrapped up with a field trip to the Tacoma Art Museum and the Museum of Glass on July 12. Students learned about the intersection of mathematics and art. Students in the module learned about M.C. Escher, tessellations, fractals, symmetry, origami, the Golden Ratio, the Fibonacci sequence.

During modules 2 and 3, which began the week of July 16 through 19  and continues July 23 through 25, focused on coding. Students have been using Chromebooks and iPads to learn coding. They have also been using Ozobots, small programmable robots. They will also take a field trip to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

Module 4 is set for July 30 through August 2 and covers the topic of nature and conservation. Students will learn about and work with ratios, rates, and percents as they study wildlife and conservation at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.
