Amya Thomasson, a sophomore at Academy Northwest, spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Thomasson was one of 19 students who served as Senate pages for the third week of the 2016 legislative session.

She was sponsored by 20th Legislative District Sen. John Braun.

“I was more than happy to sponsor Amya and I appreciate her work for us at the Capitol,” said Braun, R-Centralia.

The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

“They cracked a lot of jokes, I was not expecting that,” Thomasson said about her experience as a page on the Senate floor.

She plans on graduating from high school with her associate’s degree and hopes to someday work in the medical field.

Thomasson, 16, enjoys horse riding and participating in a multitude of art activities. She is the is the daughter of Adam Cooper and Tara Thomasson Cooper, Toledo.
