Four teenagers have been arrested in connection with a violent robbery at a Northeast Portland gas station or other armed crimes reported in the area.
At a Saturday afternoon press conference, Portland police spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Allen said police arrested four Seattle teenagers and a Portland man at a home near the 500 block of Northeast Webster Street. Authorities recovered multiple firearms, including several handguns, a shortened rifle, and large magazines, police said.
The 36-year-old Portlander was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants and not believed to be connected to the armed crimes, Allen said.
Allen said three of the teenagers were involved with the crimes related to Friday’s gas station robbery, including attempted murder in the second degree and robbery in the first degree. The fourth is accused of participating in a robbery Tuesday.
“The detectives have actually been working on multiple other cases that are connected to this crew,” Allen said “This group of individuals, as far as we can tell, most of them are juveniles, were tied to numerous other crimes.”
Detectives with Portland’s Major Crimes Unit collected evidence linking the suspects to a string of armed crimes earlier in the week, including the carjacking of a rideshare driver, an incident in which suspects allegedly pointed handguns at a man who interrupted an attempted vehicle break-in and another robbery at a Northeast Portland gas station, police said.
Some in the group were also connected to an attempted convenience store robbery early Friday, just before the shooting, Allen said.
Allen said as police work with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office charges against the suspects could change or more charges could be added.
Allen said police may contact authorities in Seattle about the suspects. Allen said police don’t yet know why they were in Portland. .
The arrests follow the Friday morning robbery at a 76 gas station on Northeast Broadway and Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where authorities say multiple armed suspects entered the convenience story and threatened a clerk behind the counter.
A second employee entered the store during the robbery, and a struggle broke out, according to authorities. Allen said multiple shots were fired striking the employee at least five times — four times in the abdomen and once in the leg with a bullet breaking his femur. The employee was taken to the hospital and underwent extensive surgery.
Allen said he did not know the employee’s medical condition as of Saturday but confirmed he was alive. He cited the “incredible efforts” of emergency responders and medical professionals, saying, “I really believe they saved this guy’s life.”
