A Tacoma police officer responding to a domestic assault call fatally shot a man Sunday afternoon.
The officer was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave while the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations conducts an investigation into the deadly use of force, Tacoma Police Department Officer Shelbie Boyd said from the scene of the incident.
The Tacoma Police Department will investigate the alleged assault and whether the officer followed policies and procedures.
The shooting occurred on the 700 block of South Stevens Street.
Police received a call about a domestic assault at a house there at 2:38 p.m., according to Boyd. Police arrived about a half-hour later. At close to 4 p.m., another call came in that shots were fired.
The Tacoma Fire Department responded and announced a man dead at the scene.
Boyd said she did not know the man's age, the nature of the alleged assault or whether anyone else was in the house at the time. Nor did she have information about the interaction before the shooting between the officer and the man who died.
The Tacoma medical examiner will release the man's name in the coming days and the Office of Independent Investigations will release the officer's name, Boyd said.
