Pe Ell boys take third at Hoquiam

Carter Phelps and Calan McCarty led the Pe Ell boys to a third-place finish in a league meet at Hoquiam on Thursday.

Phelps won the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 16.0 seconds, while McCarty finished in second in the same race with a time of 17.5 seconds. Eli Mason placed fourth in the same race with a time of 18.6 seconds, just two-tenths of a second behind North Beach’s Elton Rockey.

McCarty won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, six inches, a personal record, and Phelps finished fourth in the same event with a mark of 16 feet, one inch. Trace Shanklin set a new season-high with a jump of 12 feet, three and a half inches, a mark that put him at 15th.



Elsewhere for Pe Ell, Cowyn McGrath finished fourth in the 1,600-meter with a time of 5:25.9, and Liam McGrath placed seventh in that race and 11th in the javelin toss with a throw of 81 feet, seven inches.

Overall, the Trojans scored 40 points, 44 points behind Montesano, the winner on the boys side, and 20 points behind North Beach, which took second.

On the girls’ side, Randi Belanger placed 11th in the 100-meter race and eighth in the javelin, and Kassidy Hayes placed eighth in the long jump.
