Napavine student wins advanced recital competition

David Sexsmith won the Lewis County Chapter of Washington State Music Teachers Association’s annual play-off competition last week at the Centralia Church of the Nazarene.

Sexsmith, 14, was part of a field of eight pianists competing to be selected as Lewis County representative to the Washington State Music Teachers Conference in June at Gonzaga University in Spokane.

Sexsmith, son of Evelyn Sexsmith, of Napavine, and James Sexsmith, of Chehalis, performed Golliwogg’s Cakewalk by Debussy. Sexsmith is a student of Kay Morton.



Sylvester Stehr, son of Chris and Margaret Stehr, of Centralia, placed second with a performance of Rachmaninoff Prelude, Op. 3, No. 2. Stehr, 13, is a student of Judy Meyers.

Ben Mittge, son of Brian and Sarah Mittge, of Chehalis, earned a ranked honorable mention for his performance of Winter Nocturne by Vandall. Mittge is also a student of Kay Morton.

The students will perform at the WSMTA District Honors Recital on May 5 at 3 p.m. at the Centralia Church of the Nazarene.
