United Way of Lewis County Board President Angie Brown received the Woman of Distinction award during the annual Power of the Purse event at Centralia College on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Each year, the honor goes to a local woman who is "passionate about improving the lives of others by investing her time, talents, and resources within our community. Someone who gives of themselves before others and exhibits leadership, compassion and commitment to serving those in need in Lewis County."
She wasn't the only honoree.
For the first time, the United Way of Lewis County also issued a Lifetime Achievement Award. It went to longtime former Executive Director Debbie Campbell, who recently came out of retirement to help guide the opening of the United Learning Center in Centralia.
It was the 21st Power of the Purse event, and the first since new United Way of Lewis County Executive Director Angela French accepted her leadership position earlier this year.
This year’s Western-themed celebration, “Boots, Buckles and Bold Impact,” offered an afternoon of fashion, philanthropy and community spirit.
For more than two decades, Power of the Purse has brought together community members to support local families while giving attendees a chance to win a collection of designer handbags, specialty purses and unique raffle items.
Every dollar raised helps United Way of Lewis County continue its work to improve lives through programs that strengthen education, financial stability and health throughout the community.
This year’s event featured entertainment from local comedian Lynette Manning. Along with hors d’oeuvres and handcrafted cocktails, the evening concluded with the Dessert Dash for Dolly, where tables compete to support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
