Hiker in Washington’s Enchantments dies during snowstorm

A woman died while thru-hiking the Enchantments in a sudden snowstorm Sunday, according to the Chelan County sheriff's office.

Cold weather swept through the Cascades over the weekend and deposited snow in the high country.

Alpine areas from Crystal Mountain to Mount Rainier National Park recorded 6 inches of snow or more. A Reddit user reported camping near Tranquil Lake in the Enchantments, at 7,800 feet in elevation, where as much as 3 feet of snow fell on tents over the weekend. The user declined an interview.

Other recent visitors reported heavy fresh snowfall in the Enchantments core zone, with depths ranging from 1 to 3 feet.

The woman's name had not been released as of Tuesday evening, nor had details about exactly what happened.

The sheriff's office said it will release more information Wednesday.

The Chelan County coroner's office did not immediately respond to a reporter's inquiry.
