A hiker died near the summit of a popular Columbia River Gorge hike Friday night, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Sheriff’s deputies and Corbett firefighters responded to reports of a man suffering a medical emergency about 2 miles from the Angel’s Rest trailhead near Corbett just after 8:40 p.m. Friday, authorities said.
Other hikers administered first aid, including taking turns administering CPR, but the man, who was not immediately identified, died before Corbett firefighters reached him. Emergency crews carried the man’s body back to the trailhead. Officials later said the man died of natural causes.
Also Friday, Douglas County sheriff’s deputies performed a steep-angle rescue to aid an Oahu man who dislocated his shoulder while jumping into the North Umpqua River.
According to the sheriff’s office, Angel Antonio Ceja, 20, was road tripping with a friend, recording cliff-jumping videos to post online. Ceja had seen videos of people jumping from a log suspended high above the North Umpqua River some 200 feet upstream of Toketee Falls and decided to give it a go.
But after hitting the water, Ceja found he had dislocated his shoulder. He was able to pull himself onto a small rock shelf but could not make it back to the trail. Rescue crews used a rope system and rescue litter to lift Ceja from the gorge, where he was able to walk back to the trailhead and a waiting ambulance. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center for treatment.
