Homicide detectives are investigating after firefighters found human remains while responding to a fire Wednesday evening on the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trail in Seattle.
The suspicious death investigation was in its preliminary stages Thursday morning, said Seattle Police Department spokesperson Detective Brian Pritchard. Investigators do not believe the fire caused the person's death, he said.
The King County medical examiner's office will determine the deceased's age, gender and cause and manner of death.
A driver traveling on Interstate 5 shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday called 911 after seeing a fire burning east of the interstate and in the area of the trail, according to a Seattle police statement.
Seattle firefighters responded and contacted police after discovering a partially burned body while trying to extinguish the blaze, Pritchard said.
