Driver dies in fiery crash in Tri-Cities after fleeing from police

A driver died Friday night after he fled from police and then crashed his car near the Veterans Memorial in Columbia Park in Kennewick.

The car caught fire before police arrived.

Kennewick police had attempted to stop a car driving recklessly about 9:40 p.m. in the area of Edison Street and Paul Parish Drive, according to Kennewick police.

The driver did not stop and drove east through the park.

The Kennewick officer did not pursue the car, according to a police report.



A short time later, a caller to 911 reported that a car had crashed at the roundabout near the Veterans Memorial and was on fire.

The driver died before they could be taken to a hospital, according to Kennewick police. No one else was in the car.

Roadways in the area of the crash were closed for several hours while police investigated.

No further information was immediately available Saturday morning.
