The W.F. West High School boys and girls track and field teams stood out in the field events at the Bear Relays in Olympia on Saturday, claiming a top-five finish in nine combined events.
Caleb Busse was one of two winners for the Bearcats, uncorking a toss of 150 feet, 6 inches to comfortably win the discus. He was second in the shot put, throwing over 43 feet.
The three high jumpers they brought all cleared 5-6 with Ben Wirkkala making each jump on fewer total attempts. Trenton Schoepf and Parker Eiswald placed second and third, respectively. Fox Roberson was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 10 feet even.
For the girls, W.F. West went 2-3-4 in the pole vault as Shelby Hazelett led the contingent by clearing 7-6. Amanda Bennett secured second in the javelin with a heave of 111-09 while Leslie Morales finished top-three in the long jump and triple jump. Hannah Johnson was third in the high jump for the Bearcats.
On the track, W.F. West finished second in the 1,600-meter relay and third in the distance medley relay on the girls side. The boys best finish in a relay was winning the shuttle hurdle relay in under 73 seconds.
