XC: Mossyrock’s Johnson, Herrera Win at Toledo

Posted

TOLEDO — The Toledo-Winlock boys defended their turf at Lewis and Clark State Park, winning a SWW 1A League Trico Division meet here on Wednesday.

Mikhail Hopf and Forrest Wallace finished second (18:25) and third (18:47), respectively, to lead T-W to victory.

“It’s a pretty challenging course,” Toledo-Winlock coach Brian Layton said. “It’s up and down, there’s roots all over the place. It’s probably one of the most challenging courses we run on.”

It was Mossyrock, however, that took both top spots in the boys and girls races. For the boys, Mitch Johnson overcame an early lead by Hopf to finish first (18:10) and best his time on the same course last season by 30 seconds. Alicia Herrera was the first to cross the finish line by a 34-second margin for the Vikings (20:39) in the girls’ race.

“Mitch has got the perfect runner’s attitude,” Mossyrock coach Casey Taylor said. “He gets the most out of his talent in every race. Mitch has lots of friends on Toledo’s team so he kind of wanted to beat them.”

The Vikings finished second in the boys’ team standings.

For the girls, Herrera — who is only a freshman — had to overcome an early-race deficit and blew away the rest of the field.

“She ran cross country in middle school for the first time last year,” Taylor said. “We didn’t know what to expect but she worked hard throughout the summer and she got in touch with a trainer for the Junior Olympics.”

Kalama finished first in the girls team standings, with Katelynn Horn finishing second (24:02). Herrera’s endurance allowed her to get past Horn in the race.

“I just told Alicia to hang with Katelynn as long as she could,” Taylor said. “When it comes to the finish, Alicia always works really hard. Nobody quite has the kick at the end like her. She ran a very smart race.”

Adna finished third as a team for the girls, led by Jessie VonBargen in fourth (23:31). Mossyrock did not have a full roster to be counted in the team scores.

In the boys race, Toledo-Winlock’s Blake Wood finished fifth (19:09), and Ashton Fraser finished eighth (19:57). Mossyrock’s Tristin Watson was seventh (19:36), dropping thirty seconds off his time last year. He was followed by teammates’s Brandon Butler in eleventh (20:06) and Jess White in twelfth (20:06.09). Toledo-Winlock’s Jerry Murphy rounded out the top fifteenth (20:26).

“For us it was our first race of the season,” Toledo-Winlock coach Brian Layton said. “Jerry and Ashton ran really well. Aston improved a minute and a half from last year, Murphy was three minutes faster.”

In the girls race, Toledo-Winlock’s Sally Martin was sixth (24:02), Mossyrock’s Lucie Wamsley was seventh (24:09). Adna’s Jasmine Layden was eleventh (25:10), Mossyrock’s Lacey Wright was twelfth (25:10) and Toledo’s Kirstin Masker was fourteenth (25:48).

Mossyrock will run at the Bruce Flanagan Invitational in Woodland on Saturday. Toledo-Winlock will run at the Three Course Challenge in Seaside, Ore., next Saturday.

Snider, Robertson Go 1-2 in Home Meet

Dallas Snider and Danny Robertson finished first (16:38) and second (16:39) for the W.F. West boys cross country team as the Bearcats defeated Capital and River Ridge in a three-way meet at Stan Hedwall Park on Wednesday.

“Dallas and Danny were around a minute faster than last year’s times on this course at this date in the season,” W.F. West coach Amber Cruzan said.

Denver Parker finished fourth (17:22), shaving 10 seconds off of last season’s mark. W.F. West defeated Captial 22-33 and River Ridge 15-50.

Helping round out the scoring, T.J. Even was seventh (18:17) and Tony Swenson was eighth (18:25).

“The guys that really helped in the win against Capital were T.J. Even and Tony Swenson,” Cruzan said. “T.J. put in a lot of miles over the summer and the payoff of the hard work is being seen in every race so far this season. This is a special group of kids that have great attitudes and are willing to work hard to achieve their goals.”

The W.F. West girls got a fourth place finish from Tori Weeks (23:28) and downed River Ridge 15-50 because they didn’t have a complete team. The Bearcats lost to Capital 18-45.

“Tori Weeks is running consistently in races even with the extra hard workouts this season,” Cruzan said. “Rookie Emilee Witham ran a personal-best on this course by 40 seconds. She has a great attitude.”

Noelle Bedord was 12th (26:59), and Witham finished 23rd (30:16).

W.F. West will run at the Steilacoom Invite on Saturday.

Tigers’ Larsen Wins at Aberdeen

ABERDEEN — Centralia’s Carry Larsen came out in first place in a dual Evergreen 2A Conference cross country meet against the Bobcats here Wednesday at Makarenko Park.

Larsen covered the 3.1 mile course in 19 minutes, 17 seconds to win, knocking 2 minutes off of her time from last season on the same course. Serena Wallace, meanwhile, finished second in 21:31 — cutting 2 1/2 minutes from last year’s time.

“Both girls worked really hard over the summer, and this was an amazing confidence boost for them both,” Tiger coach Andrea McLaughlin said. “It was great to see the huge smiles when they realize that all the hard work has paid off and that racing is now really fun.”

Maddy Coombs took third in 24:43 to give the Tigers a top-three sweep.

Cory Richardson finished third for the Tiger boys in 16:53.

“Cory put in a lot of miles this summer, and he is looking very strong,” McLaughlin said.

Tim Ricker finished fourth for Centralia in 17:37. The Aberdeen boys won 22-33, but neither team fielded a complete girls squad.

Centralia will run at Chehalis against W.F. West on Wednesday.
