Weekend Basketball: MWP Pulls Away Late to Beat Rochester

MORTON — Matt Poquette scored 29 points, and Morton-White Pass pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 60-51 win over 2A Rochester here Saturday in nonleague boys hoops action.

The Timberwolves shot 51 percent (25 of 49) from the field, and MWP outscored the Warriors 15-6 in the fourth quarter after things were tied at 45 at the end of three.

“Our defense was a little slow getting out (on shooters), but we did a much better job in the fourth quarter,” MWP coach Tony Gillispie said. “It was a good game, a very competitive game, and an exciting game.”

Tristan Storey added 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting with nine rebounds for MWP. Poquette added eight rebounds and five steals, going 12 of 19 from the floor.

“We had a little adversity, but I was glad we could overcome that in the fourth quarter,” Gillispie said, “and see what our kids can do in a nerve-wracking game.”

Bryce Lollar led Rochester with 19 points, and Keegan Goldrick chipped in 13.

“We showed up ready to go, and it was a good, close game,” Rochester coach Mark Goldrick said. “They stretched it out there at the end, but it was back and forth.”

Morton-White Pass (3-0, 2-0) plays in Randle on Tuesday against Napavine. Rochester (2-2) plays at Elma on Tuesday.



Girls Basketball

Ocosta Shuts Down Winlock, 67-24

WESTPORT — Ocosta had four players score in double figures here Saturday in a 67-24 win over Winlock in nonleague girls basketball action.

The Cardinals turned the ball over 46 times in the loss, and attempted just 30 field goals.

Kaylee Barnum led Ocosta (5-0) with 16 points. Kristi Raffelson added 15, Kylee Poirer scored 14 and Erika Snider tallied 11.

Madison Lofberg scored 9 points to lead Winlock, and the Cards’ freshmen all played well, coach Tori Nelson said.

Winlock (1-4, 0-2 Central 2B League) hosts Toledo on Wednesday.
