NAPAVINE — Napavine and Winlock couldn’t settle the game in regulation, and the Tigers were able to prevail 3-2 in a Central 2B League girls soccer match here on Wednesday.

The Cardinals scored first on a goal by Alexa Barragan in the 21st minute. Napavine responded quickly with a goal in the 23rd minute by Chloe Stewart and a 1-1 tie at halftime.

Napavine took the lead in the second half on a goal from Sydney Burdick and an assist from Halee Williams. Barragan added her second of the night in the 72nd minute to even the game.

In the shootout, Cheleena Squibb, Gabby Cruz and Azhia Camps each scored along with Napavine’s Williams, Jadynne League and Trinity Underhill for a 3-3 tie after five shots. Winlock’s miss on the sixth shooter allowed Napavine’s Xoee Pope to step up and bury the game winner for the Tigers.

“I was immensely happy with them. The last two games, we were hurting, both skill wise and mental wise,” Napavine coach Emily Boettcher said. “We had a little pow wow to get our juices flowing again. I was very proud of them.”

Boettcher noted the performance of Williams in the middle and Makensee Taliaferro-Bouge’s performance on the right wing for the Tigers.

Winlock coach Brian Ziese was pleased with his team’s performance despite the loss.

“Barragan just had a great game. The biggest thing that helped us was coming back. I didn’t know how we would react but they still had some fight in them,” Ziese said. “They were still battling and didn’t fall. Our fifth shooter to win the game hits the pole and we steal one from them. The soccer gods weren’t in our favor.”

Napavine (2-2) hosts Onalaska on Monday in a league match while Winlock (1-3) faces Life Christian on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Tacoma.

“I think that the defense did really well. We had good rotation in the back with the centerbacks helping our outside back and we were just doing really well with our communication,” said Vasquez.
