TENINO — Tenino’s bats were never able to get going as Hoquiam earned a 5-1 win in a 1A Evergreen League baseball game here on Wednesday.
Logan Brewer pitched 6 ⅓ innings, allowing four runs while striking out seven batters. Hoquiam’s Payton Quintanilla pitched a complete game to earn the win.
At the plate, Brewer was 2-for-3 and Ryan Deoskey had a hit and knocked in the only run for the Beavers.
“Quintanilla, he’s pretty solid up there. He challenged us and we didn’t have any response,” Tenino coach Ryan Schlesser said. “(Brewer) threw really well. It was the same story, pitching kept us in it but the bats never woke up. We couldn’t get anything going.”
Hoquiam scored two runs in the first before adding a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Tenino plated their only run in the sixth inning.
Tenino (6-10, 4-5) travels to Montesano on Friday for a league game.
Black Hills Edges Centralia
TUMWATER — Derek Beairsto pitched 5 ⅔ solid innings for Centralia but it wasn’t enough as Black Hills won 3-2 in an Evergreen 2A Conference baseball game here on Wednesday.
Beairsto gave up three hits and struck out eight in the start.
At the plate, Cameron Cabrera was 2-for-2 and Tyler Milton hit a two RBI single in the second to bring across the only runs of the game for the Tigers.
Centralia scored two runs in the second inning but Black Hills came back and tallied a run in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the game and walked off in the seventh with the win.
“We sure didn’t have much momentum carry over from last night. We executed nothing at the plate, couldn’t get bunts down, couldn’t hit ground balls,” Centralia coach Rex Ashmore said. “Our adjustments at the plate weren’t very good. We had 14 of our 21 outs were fly balls and pop ups. Obviously, that’s not going to get it done.”
Centralia (10-5, 6-4) is back at Wheeler Field on Thursday against W.F. West to resume a rained out game from Monday. The Bearcats lead 1-0 going into the third inning.
Toledo Shoots Past Castle Rock
TOLEDO — Castle Rock handed out 15 free passes to Toledo to help the Indians earn a 10-4 win on senior night in a non-league baseball game here on Wednesday.
Four Toledo pitchers combined to allow just four hits. Kaden Sellards had the longest stint on the mound, throwing 3 ⅓ innings in relief while allowing one hit and no runs while striking out four batters.
At the plate, Hunter Eaton hit a double, scored a run and had three RBI. Ryan Bloomstrom also had a double with two RBI and two walks. Jesse Towns had a hit, a RBI, two runs and three walks and Matt Stavig had four walks and four runs for Toledo.
Castle Rock led 4-1 after one inning but the Indians scored four runs in the second, three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth inning to propel Toledo to the win.
Toledo (4-12, 1-10) travels to Wahkiakum on Friday for a Central 2B League doubleheader to wrap up the regular season.
Note: Kalama won both games of a doubleheader on Monday, 11-0 and 19-4, against Toledo in a Central 2B League doubleheader in Toledo.
W.F. West Comes From Behind to Top Aberdeen
ABERDEEN — W.F. West trailed until the sixth inning, scoring seven runs in the final two innings to secure a 9-4 win over Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference baseball game here on Wednesday.
Tanner Vaughn earned the win on the mound, pitching 1 ⅔ innings of relief while allowing no hits, no runs and no walks while striking out five batters. Leandre Gaines allowed one run and one walk with a strikeout in 1 ⅓ innings of work and Austin Johnson closed out the game with no hits and no runs with one walk and one strikeout.
At the plate, Brock Jones was 2-for-4 with a double and a run and Gaines was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs. Max Taylor was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI and Brit Lusk was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Bearcats.
Aberdeen scored a run in the first and two runs in the second inning for a 3-1 lead. W.F. West plated a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2 and took the lead with four runs in the sixth and insured the win with three runs in the seventh.
W.F. West (14-1, 10-0) travels to Wheeler Field on Thursday to complete a rained out game from Monday against Centralia. The Bearcats lead 1-0 after two innings.
Pirates Pick Up Where They Left Off in Win Over Onalaska
ONALASKA — Their game may have been suspended on Monday but that didn’t do anything to halt Adna’s momentum as they wound up defeating the Loggers 5-2 here on Wednesday in Central 2B League baseball action.
Monday’s game was suspended in the second inning with Adna holding a lead in the second inning. Levi Gates started Monday’s contest but Sawyer Burdick handled the pitching duties on Wednesday, finishing with 10 strikeouts and two earned runs allowed in five innings of work.
Onalaska was only able to get to Burdick briefly in the fourth inning when they scored both of their runs. AJ Volk finished with two singles for the Loggers while Cole Christensen added a single, a double, a run scored and a RBI. Kayden Allison also had a hit for the home team.
“Allison singled to get us going in the fourth inning,” said Onalaska coach Rocky Stanley. “It was a lot better conditions today but I don’t think the weather really made a difference for either team.”
Burdick helped his own cause at the plate for Adna with a double. Elmer Loose was 2-for-4 in the game while Trevor Minkoff and Cole Fay each delivered RBI hits.
That wasn’t all that the Pirates offense brought to the table.
“Gates had a two run home run in the seventh that was huge,” noted Stanley. ”It kind of opened things up there because it was 3-2 at that point.’
Onalaska only has one day to lick its wounds as they prepare for a pivotal trip north.
“We’ve got a huge doubleheader on Friday at the RAC with Rainier. If we want to be in the top four going into Districts we need at least a split,” Stanley said. “We’re as good as anybody, we’ve just got to play good baseball.”
Onalaska (10-6, 7-4 league) will play Rainier at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey in a doubleheader on Friday.
Adna (14-3, 11-2 league) hosts River Ridge on Friday in a non-league game.
Rochester Watches T-Birds Take Lead, Fly Away
TUMWATER — The Warriors held an early lead here on Wednesday but had to watch as the Thunderbirds stormed back to claim a 7-2 victory in Evergreen 2A Conference baseball action.
Keegan Goldrick tossed all seven innings for Rochester but fell victim to a slew of defensive miscues in the losing effort. He finished the game with three earned runs and six hits allowed while striking out four Tumwater batters.
“Keegan did a great job again tonight. He’s been our hard luck pitcher all year long. It seems like every time he’s on the mound we find a way to boot the ball around and don’t make the plays when we need to,” said Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom.
Tumwater scored three runs in the fifth inning and followed that up with four runs in their ensuing trip to the plate. Quarnstrom noted that a frantic squeeze play helped the T-Birds find the cracks in Rochester’s defense.
“We were up 2-0 there for awhile. The errors did not help in that situation and kind of allowed the flood gates to open,” Quarnstrom said.
Rochester scored both of their runs in the third inning after Dallin Schlecht and Jared Winters singled to start things off. A ground ball to shortstop by Landon Hawes scored Schlect for a fielder's choice RBI. Tyler Soderback and Bodey Smith then notched back-to-back singles but Quarnstrom noted both hits were too sharp to bring a runner home. The Warriors wound up picking up their second run on a squeeze play of their own.
From that point on Tumwater pitcher Shea Bowen took control of the game.
“The real story of the game is their pitcher. Once he settled in there, you could see him pick up the tempo, pick up the pace, and in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings he was as good as he was all night long,” Quarnstrom noted. “You just have to tip your cap to him at that point.”
Rochester (6-6, 5-6 league) will play at Aberdeen on Thursday.
Rainier Routs Morton-White Pass
WINLOCK — Rainier put the finishing touches on a 27-0 win over Morton-White Pass here on Wednesday in a Central 2B League baseball game.
The original contest began on Monday in Randle but was postponed in the second inning when the skies opened. The Mountaineers held a 16-0 lead at that point.
It was more of the same on Wednesday in Winlock as Rainier added 11 runs in three innings.
The Mountaineers tallied 17 hits in the game. Jeff Ashby had three hits, three RBI, and five runs scored for Rainier. Zach Lofgren added three hits and three RBI.
Morton-White Pass was held to just four hits in the game. Dylan Hamre, Tye Chour, Peyton Brown and Conner Dill each had a hit for the Timberwolves.
Morton-White Pass will play a doubleheader at Napavine on Friday.
Mossyrock and Winlock Go the Distance
WINLOCK — One big inning propelled Mossyrock past the Cardinals here on Wednesday as they snagged a 9-3 non-league baseball victory.
The Vikings went off for seven runs in the second inning thanks to three hits, and a heap of free passes. Mossyrock added two runs in the fifth inning in order to extend their lead.
Mossyrock totaled five hits on the day. Darren Kolb Jr., Brennan Shriver and Elmer Mendoza each had hits for the Vikings.
Winlock scored one run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh. Kaden Harrington and Talen Lofberg each had hits for the Cardinals. Nathan Suhrbier used his time out from behind the plate to smack two hits, including a triple that scored a run.
Winlock (1-10) will play at Toutle Lake on Saturday. Mossyrock (5-9, 3-8 league) will play Kalama in a doubleheader at Lower Columbia College on Friday.
