NAPAVINE — Tenino’s Brieanna Dell scored five goals in the first half to help the Beavers earn a 9-0 win over Napavine in a non-league girls soccer game here on Wednesday.
The first goal came in the 5th minute, as goalkeeper Abby Severse drop kicked a ball to Dell for an assist and a 1-0 lead. Dell scored again in the 21st minute with an assist by Molly Craig and added another goal in the 25th minute on an assist by Morgan Miner.
Iris Campesino fed Dell for her fourth goal of the game in the 27th minute and Dell scored unassisted in the 37th minute for a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Sierra Pogue, in her first career high school game, scored a goal in the 38th minute. Emma Barr found the back of the net in the 41st minute with an assist from Miner and Miner scored a goal unassisted in the 51st minute. Miner recorded her third assist of the night in the 58th minute on a goal by Abby Severse.
Severse made two saves in net in the first half and Trinity Tafoya made two saves in the second half in Tenino’s clean sheet.
“It took us a little bit of time to adjust to the grass. We didn’t have Megan Letts tonight and it took us a little bit of time to settle in,” Tenino coach Kevin Schultz said. “Once the second goal came in the 21st minute, we started to open it us and pass it better. We’ve been talking about when they have to play the ball back and when is the opportunity to go forward and they did a good job of that.”
Schultz also gave kudos to Molly Craig and Kayla Feltus pushing up and joining the offense from their outside back positions.
Napavine goalkeeper Zaylii Orozco, a freshman in her first career high school game, made 15 saves. Napavine coach Emily McCarthy applauded her performance against the Beavers.
“I am immensely proud of them. We actually played Tenino in a friendly over the summer and they beat us by the same score but they played half of their JV team,” Napavine coach Emily McCarthy said. “I thought that showed great improvement.”
McCarthy highlighted Marissa Segers in her first career high school soccer game and Sydney Burdick at the sweeper position.
Napavine (0-1) hits the road to take on Evergreen Lutheran at 2:45 p.m. on Friday in a non-league game. Tenino (1-0) hosts W.F. West next Tuesday.
Winlock Tops Evergreen Lutheran in Season Opener
PUYALLUP — Winlock used a barrage of shots to overcome the defensive prowess of Evergreen Lutheran here on Wednesday in order to capture a 2-1 victory in non-league girls soccer.
Alexa Barragan got the Cardinals on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal in the 28th minute but Evergreen was able to tie the contest up before halftime with a goal in the 34th minute. Winlock coach Brian Ziese said the slip up gave him plenty of fodder for his locker room talk during the intermission.
“We were just crowding around too much. We had some girls who hadn’t played a lot at their new positions,” Ziese said. “We were just trying to adjust to the first game jitters.”
Ziese noted that his team got up a gob of on-target shots during the game but found the goalline a tough threshold to break.
“Their goalie had tons of saves on breakaways. She’s a really top top goalie. A premier goalie. It’s good for our girls to see a goalie of that caliber early in the season,” Ziese noted. “The score should have been like 10-1. It should have been a lot worse.”
Ziese was pleased that his team was able to open up their offense for a few more looks in the second half. Gabby Cruz finally made the Eagles pay in the 55th minute when she dribbled downfield and set herself up for the go-ahead score.
Winlock goalie Kiya Peppers was able to fend off the Eagles in order to preserve the victory.
“She had to make three really good saves,” Ziese sad.
Ziese also touted the play of one of his freshman forward/midfielders.
“I have to give credit to Angela Gil-Munoz, a little freshman. She had a great game for us tonight,” said Ziese. “She was working her tail off for us and around the ball tonight.”
Winlock (1-0) will play at Seton Catholic on Monday.
Loggers Hold Riptide at Bay
ONALASKA — The Loggers needed a late goal here on Wednesday in order to set themselves up for a 3-2 win over Raymond-South Bend in non-league girls soccer action.
CeCe Russ, a sophomore, scored what wound up the game-winning goal for Onalaska with just two minutes left in the contest.
Before that, though, the Riptide had put up a charge to tie the game up at 2-2. Trailing 2-0 Raymond-South Bend got their first goal of the night in the 54th minute off of a penalty kick. Their game-tying goal came in the 73rd minute thanks to another penalty kick opportunity.
Luckily for the home crowd the game got off on the right foot for the Loggers when Brooklyn Sandridge, a freshman, scored the first of her two goals on the day just after play began. Her second goal came in the second half during the 44th minute.
On Monday the Loggers defeated Castle Rock 1-0 in their season opener.
Onalaska (2-0) will travel to play Life Christian Academy on Monday.
