CATHLAMET — The Vikings played great defense and scored just enough points to earn a 33-30 win against Wahkiakum in a non-league girls basketball game here on Wednesday.
Mossyrock was led by the 12 points of Payton Torrey. Andee Nelson added six points and seven rebounds. Caelyn Marshall totaled 11 rebounds, Hailey Brooks added eight rebounds and Faith Mulligan added seven rebounds.
Jansi Merz led the Mules with 10 points and Paige Mace added eight points.
The Vikings led 7-6 after the first quarter and kept the momentum going to build a 20-14 lead at halftime. Wahkaikum made a push in the fourth quarter but Mossyrock withstood the wave to earn the victory.
“It’s a big win, it’s always a tough time playing in Wahkiakum. The girls were excited and a little nervous. In the beginning, it was tight but we got a little bit of a lead in the second quarter,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “Wahkiakum wasn’t going to give up. They got within a few points but we were able to grind out the rest of the game. We knocked knocked down free throws to get the win on the road.”
Mossyrock was 10 of 14 from the free throw line and coach Moorcroft praised the team’s effort on defense.
Mossyrock (4-0) hosts Naselle on Monday.
Schultz Powers Rainier Past Onalaska
ONALASKA — Rainier’s Kaeley Schultz scored 30 points to lead the Mountaineers to a 64-51 win against Onalaska in a non-league girls basketball game here on Wednesday.
Onalaska’s Callie Lawrence scored 13 points and Eryn Duryea added 11 points and six rebounds. Carmen Cleveland-Barrera chipped in six points and six rebounds.
Faith Boesch added 14 points for the Mountaineers.
Rainier shot 46 percent from the field while Onalaska shot 36 percent. The Mountaineers also won the rebounding battle, 30-24.
Onalaska led 9-7 after the first quarter but Rainier played solid in the second quarter, outscoring the Loggers 21-9 for a 28-18 lead at halftime. The Mountaineers put up 23 points in the third quarter to pull away for good.
“I think that Rainier played very well tonight. They came to put on a show. We’ve been playing very good defense our first two games. Our goal was to hold Schultz to less than 30,” Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy said. “We got into some early foul trouble. Alex Cleveland-Barrera got into some foul trouble, as did Callie Lawrence. Morgan Hamilton, she’s been playing solid minutes and she got into foul trouble. We had spurts in the third and fourth quarter, two points for their three every time. We weren’t able to dig ourselves out of that hole.”
McCoy commended the play of Duryea, who also added three assists to her stat line.
Onalaska (1-2) travels to Tenino at 7 p.m. on Saturday for a non-league game.
Eagles Fly By Tigers
CENTRALIA — Centralia struggled offensively and Elma took advantage in a 51-27 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Wednesday.
Carissa Kaut scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Tigers. Jasmine Mora and Madelinn Corwin each chipped in five points.
Jalyn Sackrider led all scorers with 23 points and Ella Moore added 10 points for Elma.
Elma led Centralia 14-4 after the first quarter and increased the lead to 26-9 at halftime.
Centralia won the third quarter, 10-9, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback.
“The first quarter, the last couple games, we just got down but we battled. We made some adjustments at halftime and won the third quarter,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “She’s (Sackrider) good, we were really focused on stopping her in the second half. She had five points in the second half but we have to find different ways and things to score. That part, we’re just not quite there right now.”
Centralia (0-4) travels to Tacoma to face Franklin Pierce on Friday.
