Tuesday’s 2B Girls Basketball: Chinooks Overwhelm Pirates

Posted

ADNA — Down 17 at halftime, Adna tried to make a comeback in the second half, but came up short as Kalama earned a 55-45 win in Central 2B League action here on Tuesday.

Devanie Kleemeyer led the Pirates with 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Isabella Elwood chipped in 16 points. Kalama’s Parker Esary scored 18 points and Kaelyn Shipley had 13.

The loss was the first of the season for Adna, and the Chinooks are now tied with the Pirates for second place in the C2BL.

“It’s not a terrible thing,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “Sometimes it takes something like this. I hope they realize how close they really were to cutting back to 6 or 8. When you’re not ready, and you don’t come out ready to go, a good team like that can keep you in the hole. You just can’t bounce back from that.”

Adna managed just 6 points in the second frame, allowing Kalama to take a 33-16 lead at halftime.

Kalama’s edge was with Shipley and Esary inside, and both took full advantage of their size, scoring repeatedly on putbacks — even though Adna outrebounded Kalama, 36-35.

“The key to the game going in was rebounding, and they beat us up pretty good on the glass,” Bannish said. “They’re not a team that’s going to kill you from the outside. Second chance points will beat you. You look at the end of the game, and you lose by 10. … When you dig a hole in the first half, sometimes it’s hard to get back out of.”

Bannish commended Payton Aselton for her energy in the fourth quarter.

Adna (11-1, 7-1 league) has another tough test on Thursday, traveling to Toutle to face the Ducks in a C2BL contest.

Lee’s Big Double-Double Leads Napavine Past Ducks

NAPAVINE — Melissa Lee turned in a solid performance and Napavine took over after a slow first quarter to send Toutle Lake packing in a 57-40 Central 2B League girls hoops win here Tuesday.

Lee scored 20 points, hauled in 20 rebounds and blocked five shots to pace Napavine.

“Melissa was diving all over the floor. She put together a complete game tonight,” Napavine coach Jeremy Landram said.

Mollie Olson added 19 points for the Tigers, while Becca Snaza chipped in 8.

The Ducks led 17-13 after a quarter, but were held to just 12 points over the next two frames.

“Toutle Lake’s a real gritty, very scrappy team to play against,” Landram said, “so for our group of girls to come play against a team that plays so hard is a really good challenge and step in the right direction for them.”

Britzy Hockett scored 13 and Ashlynn Dean added 12 for Toutle Lake (6-4, 5-3 league).

Napavine (6-6, 6-2 league) plays at Winlock on Thursday.

Rainier Too Much for Winlock

RAINIER — The Cardinals had a rough night and couldn’t get past Rainier in a 41-40 C2BL loss here Tuesday.

Maggie Howsden led Winlock with 10 points, but the Cardinals failed to complete a comeback in the fourth quarter.

“Normally we’re pretty tough defensively and we pressure the ball, and we didn’t do that,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “We had a really rough night. We didn’t come to play.”

The Cardinals trailed 31-25 after three quarters and closed the gap late, but a turnover on the final possession sealed the loss.

Nicole Francis and Taylor Holmes each scored 11 to lead Rainier.

Winlock (3-8, 1-7 league) hosts Napavine on Thursday.

Mules Clobber Loggers

ONALASKA — Wahkiakum had four players in double figures, leading the Mules to a 72-25 win over Onalaska in Central 2B League basketball here on Tuesday night.

Peyton Souvenir led all scorers with 18 points. Macie Elliott recorded 16 points, Savannah Burdick added 15 points and Maddy Mace had 10 points. Onalaska’s Kasey Hoyt led the Loggers with 7 points.

Wahkiakum built a 17-7 lead after the first quarter, and extended the advantage to 34-17 at halftime. Onalaska couldn’t find much scoring in the second half, scoring eight total points as the Mules galloped to victory.

“We had a pretty good first half. We fought hard, played hard. In the second half, we just didn’t come out to play,” Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy said. “They shot the ball well. They are just a really good team. We’re young and working on some things still.

McCoy noted McKenzie Pannkuk had a good game guarding Souvenir, who added 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Onalaska (5-7, 4-4 league) plays next on Thursday at Mossyrock in a league showdown.

Mossyrock Mows Down Morton-White Pass

RANDLE — Morton-White Pass couldn’t find their shooting touch here on Tuesday night, as Mossyrock earned a 43-24 win in Central 2B League basketball.

Ava Nelson led all scorers with 11 and Stephanie Fried added 10 points for the Vikings. Belen Salguero led MWP with eight points, and Taylor Nilius chipped in three points and a team high 14 rebounds.

It was a slow start for both teams, with Mossyrock leading 6-3 after the first quarter. Morton-White Pass struggled in the second quarter, allowing Mossyrock to distance themselves with a 23-9 lead at halftime. The Vikings continued to play well in the second half to cruise to the win.

“We reverted back to where we were right before Christmas, down in the teens in shooting percentage,” MWP coach Tom Griffith said. “We brought (our shooting percentage) up over that Christmas break and at the Rochester tournament. Tonight, it was a combination of turnovers and low shooting percentage. That second quarter kind of did us in. We just have one bad quarter where we can’t buy a bucket.”

Morton-White Pass (3-8, 0-7 league) plays on Thursday at Toledo, while Mossyrock hosts Onalaska on Thursday.

Toledo Tops Trojans

PE ELL — Toledo shot out of the gate here Tuesday night and never let their foot off the gas on the way to a 50-30 Central 2B League victory over the hometown Trojans.

“Toledo came out and they shot very well in the first quarter,” said Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps. “They got out on top of us by nearly the same margin we lost the game.”

In that first frame Toledo scored 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting. Meanwhile, Pe Ell managed just 5 points in the first quarter and sank just 13 field goals in the game on 26 percent shooting.

Toledo was paced offensively by Anna Tauscher’s 20 points. Kal Schaplow added 10 points for Toledo and Ally Bacon chipped in 9 points. Toledo also won the rebound battle by a tally of 35 to 29 with Emily Tyner hauling in a game-high 10 boards.

“We’ve got to do a better job defensively if we want to win some of these games,” emphasized Phelps. “We can’t come out and go down 15 and expect to have any realistic chance to win.”

Railey Smith lead the Pe Ell scoring effort with 8 points, while Maggie Elliott added 7 points and Dakota Brooks added 6. Brooks and Elliott each grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

“Maggie did well for us tonight,” said Phelps. “She was rebounding well and disrupting their offense.”

Pe Ell (2-10, 1-7 league) will play at Kalama on Thursday.
