Thursday's Prep Volleyball: Mossyrock Hands Napavine First Loss of Season

MOSSYROCK — Mossyrock played off the energy of the home crowd, helping the Vikings deliver Napavine their first loss of the season 3-1 in a Central 2B League volleyball match here on Thursday.

Napavine started off strong, but Mossyrock came back and won the first set 25-18.

Napavine responded with a 25-22 second set victory. The Tigers were rolling in the third set, leading 7-2 early. The Vikings slowly closed the gap and won the third set 25-23. Mossyrock carried that momentum to close out the match in the fourth set 25-15.

“Volleyball has a lot of momentum swings. When it’s going well, it’s easy to play and it’s hard to play when the other team has the momentum and I thought we did a good job swinging back,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said. “We put away balls on long rallies and kept on attacking, I’m proud of them for those reasons.”

Stephanie Fried played an outstanding game, recording 27 digs, 14 kills and was 15 of 15 serving. Lainee Grose was also 15 of 15 serving and Ava Nelson added 31 assists.

Paige Moorcroft tallied 11 kills and six stuff blocks, Faith Mulligan added seven kills and Jamie Carlson recorded 24 digs. Heather Edgar added six stuff blocks for the Vikings.

Napavine’s Mollie Olson had 15 kills, 21 digs and three block kills. Abbi Music totaled five kills, 22 digs and served 100 percent, and Carleigh Oster served 100 percent with five digs and Melissa Lee had six kills and 10 digs.

“We definitely didn’t play our best, we were scrambling a lot. I didn’t feel like we serve/received well, those are things that are fixable,” Napavine coach Monica Dailey said. “Those are things we normally do well at. We know what we’re capable of and we’ll put this one behind us and learn from it.”

The first match was a nonleague game that went five sets with Napavine on the winning end. Mossyrock was happy to have the home crowd for a league match.

“Home court advantage is huge. We can give a few of the points to our crowd, you can see it in the girls how they respond to the crowd,” Nelson said. “They won on their home court and we won on our home court, it’ fun to be at home. It’s league, if we have to lose one, it’s best to not be league.”

The big momentum swing came in the third set, with Napavine leading most of the way, with the Vikings never giving up and eventually taking the set and the next set to win the match.

“It was a disappointment, we were up by quite a bit. The way it was looking, it was our game,” Dailey said. “We made some errors at some inopportune times. Their mental game was a lot stronger, kudos to them.”

Mossyrock (9-1, 7-0 league) now leads the C2BL standings, and the Vikings and Napavine (11-1, 7-1 league) both play in the Adna tournament on Saturday.

Onalaska Dominates Rainier

ONALASKA — The Lady Loggers flexed their muscles against Rainier, as Onalaska won 3-0 in a Central 2B League volleyball match here on Thursday.

Onalaska won each set 25-5, 25-9 and 25-15.

Olivia Mitten recorded 10 kills, and McKenzie Pannkuk added five kills and was 11 of 11 serving. Phoebe Rich chipped in 17 digs and Kayla Osborne tallied four assists and served 100 percent.

“I think they played really well. We set up a game plan at practice and the girls stuck to it all night. They did a great job executing it,” Onalaska coach Terri Dalsted said.

Onalaska (4-7, 4-4 league) is in action at the Adna Tournament on Saturday.

Adna Tops Toledo in Four

ADNA — Toledo’s three game win streak came to an end here on Thursday, as Adna won 3-1 in a Central 2B League volleyball match.

Adna won the first set 25-17, and needed extra points in the second set but still prevailed 28-26. Toledo won the third set 26-24, but Adna closed out the match in the fourth set 25-17.

Darian Humphrey had eight digs and 10 kills, Kelsi Latimer added 15 assists and Adison Stewart recorded six aces.

Adna coach Wendie Dotson noted the defensive play of SameeJo Moon and Emma Eko, noting Eko was brought up from JV this game and did an excellent job coming off the bench.

Adna (4-9, 3-6 league) hosts a tournament on Saturday, while Toledo (3-9, 2-6 league) hosts Napavine on Monday in a league match.

Pe Ell Falls to Toutle Lake

PE ELL — Pe Ell played a great game against Toutle Lake, but it wasn’t enough as the Ducks earned a 3-1 win in a Central 2B League volleyball match.

Toutle Lake won the first set 25-12, but Pe Ell answered in the second set with a 25-23 win. The Ducks regrouped and won the next two sets, 25-16 and 25-20.

Ellie Little served 100 percent, Alli Justice added 15 assists and Maggie Elliott added 13 kills.

“I think we played fantastic today. The girls did a great job of playing good clean fundamental volleyball. I’m super proud of them and they played great together as a team,” Pe Ell coach Karie Cleveland said.

Pe Ell (0-11, 0-8 league) hosts Wahkiakum on Monday in a C2BL match.

2A VOLLEYBALL

Centralia Takes Down Black Hills

The Tigers showed how good they can play here on Thursday, defeating Black Hills 3-1 in an Evergreen 2A Conference volleyball match.

Centralia won the first two sets, 25-20 and 26-24. Black Hills won the third set 25-22, but the Tigers answered and closed out the match in the fourth set 25-21.

Rachel Wilkerson played a tremendous game for the Tigers with 25 kills and 18 digs. McKenna Smith tallied 15 kills and Chelsea Petrino added 10 kills and 21 digs.

Danika Jensen served 23 of 24 with three aces, Kylie Sharp was 16 of 16 serving with two aces and 27 digs and Joelle Metter recorded 42 assists for Centralia.

“I thought we played really well. It was our most complete outing of the season, we’ve really been trying to challenge ourselves to be more consistent and control our side of the net,” Centralia coach Neil Sharp said. “Everyone did their job and pitched in. We played up there, they thumped us pretty good. The girls remembered that and played with a chip on their shoulder about it. We came into the game 4th in league and we’re not really used to that. We need to pick it up here and the girls responded.”

Centralia (15-7, 4-4 league) travels to Aberdeen on Tuesday for an EvCo match.

W.F. West Sweeps Rochester

ROCHESTER — The Bearcats came to Rochester on Thursday and left with a 3-0 win over the Warriors in an Evergreen 2A Conference volleyball match.

W.F. West won each set 25-21, 25-17 and 25-14.

Kaylie Hoyt led the team with 11 kills. Makenzie Moore added nine kills, Megan Pallas recorded four aces and Ashlyn Whalen had a team-high 20 digs. Haley Simmons tallied 16 assists and Paytton contributed 10 assists for the Bearcats.

“I think the girls played good. We messed around with our lineup, most of the girls played. They were very steady,” W.F. West coach Emily Mora said.

Rochester’s Paige Winter and Lexi Jones-Sederberg each had three kills and Winter added two blocks and nine digs. Marissa Rigsbee recorded six assists and Ashton Eyer had two kills for the Warriors.

“They played a good game. We picked up our momentum from the last time we played them and from Tuesday,” Rochester coach Wendy Hawes said.

W.F. West (7-5, 5-3 league) hosts Black Hills on Tuesday on senior night, while Rochester (3-11, 0-8 league) travels to Tumwater to play the Thunderbirds in an EvCo match on Tuesday.
