ROCHESTER — It was a scoreless first half but the Bearcats got rolling in the second half to earn a 4-0 win against Rochester in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls soccer match here on Thursday.
Madi Mencke scored 38 seconds into the second half on an assist by Cameron Sheets. Becca Deskins scored the next goal on an assist by Mencke and the two reversed roles for the next goal. Taya McCallum scored off a corner kick by Abbey Duffey for the final tally of the game.
The Rochester goalkeeper made 11 saves. W.F. West fired 15 shots against the Warriors.
“They played well. We came out a little sluggish after an emotional big win against Black Hills on Tuesday. As a coach, you’re always curious how girls will respond. On the road, we came out a little sluggish. Rochester was playing hard the first half, they did a great job of not giving opportunities,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said. “We weren’t creating much but at halftime, we had a good little heart-to-heart. The intensity increased second half and the goal 38 seconds into the half helped us get into things. The midfield and back line did a good job of possessing and getting wide and attacking down the flanks. It was fun and exciting to watch. It was a good opportunity to get girls some good solid minutes. I’m proud of the effort they put in.”
Anderson noted midfielder Kyla McCallum did a good job of staying composed and distributing the ball against Rochester.
W.F. West (8-2-1, 3-2) hosts Centralia on Tuesday while Rochester (1-8-1, 0-4) travels to Aberdeen on Tuesday for an EvCo contest.
Centralia Blanked by Tumwater
The Thunderbirds gave Centralia all they could handle here in the Hub City on Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory in 2A Evergreen Conference soccer action.
Hallie Bergford led Tumwater with a hat trick that consisted of goals in the 21st, 23rd, and 64th minutes. Emily Briggs topped off the T-Birds scoring with a goal in the 75th minute.
“We didn’t have a lot of shots on goal. They did a pretty good job of squashing whatever we tried to do,” said Centralia coach Henry Gallanger.
He added that his goalkeeper, Jimena Luis, stopped 16 shots on goal on the night.
“Lilly Babka did a really good job stepping into the backline as a freshman against a pretty good team. I thought she did very well tonight.”
Centralia (1-8, 1-3 league) will play at W.F. West on Tuesday.
