Summer Softball: Rochester Takes Down Shelton

Posted

OLYMPIA — Rochester only had six hits but it was more than enough to defeat Shelton 11-5 in four innings in a summer softball game here on Monday.

Rochester’s Jessa Lenzi had four walks and three runs and Kassidy Byrd added three walks and two runs. LJ Smith was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Kaylei Clark pitched three innings, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts. She also had a hit and a walk at the plate.

Rochester scored one run in the first inning before plating four runs in the second and third innings. The home team added two more runs in the fourth inning.

“Shelton had several of their varsity kids in the game, so it was great to be able to control the bulk of the game with our young team even though we were missing some of our own players this week,” Rochester coach Dave Montgomery said. “We weren't as sharp in fielding but we made plays when needed, including an unassisted double play by Malia (Kolle) at first base and an outfield assist by (Natalie) Mace in the last inning, throwing out a runner at third. At the plate, the top of our order did a great job staying patient and getting on base while the middle of our lineup drove them home.”

Rochester is 7-0 and has one game left against Rainier/Yelm/River Ridge on Monday at Stevens Field in Olympia.
