The State Track & Field Championships start today and run through Saturday in Tacoma and Cheney.
The 1B, 2B and 1A meets are held at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field in Cheney, starting at 4 p.m. today. Friday’s events go from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. All running events, along with several field events, have finals on Saturday, with an opening ceremony at 9:15 a.m. and meet-ending 4x400 relay at 4:55 p.m. The 2A state meet is held in conjunction with the 3A and 4A meets at Mount Tahoma Stadium, starting at 3:20 p.m. this afternoon and concluding Saturday afternoon.
Here’s a few local athletes to watch at each meet.
2B
Napavine’s Grace Hamre will be looking to win four events in Cheney for the Tigers — the 100, 200, 400 and 4x200, being joined by teammates Mollie Olson, Alex Pope and Xylee Pope in the latter. Napavine’s time in the 4x200 from districts — 1:47.95 — gives them the top seed entering the state meet.
Olson also has a shot to medal in the triple jump and both hurdles events for the Tigers
Josh Schulz is competing in four events for Pe Ell. Schulz is the top seed in the boys long jump, the second seed in the triple jump and 200, and ranked third in the state in the 100.
District champion Conner Locke of Napavine is seeded second in the 100, with a time of 11.17. Locke will also be competing in the 200.
Locke’s teammate Jacob Johnston is the top-ranked discus thrower, with a mark of 148-8, entering Saturday’s competition, and teammate Chase Van Wyck is a former state shot put champion.
Pe Ell’s Tyler Justice, who broke his school record in the 300 hurdles at districts, enters the state meet with the top time in that event by over a second at 40.29. Justice is also entered in the 110 hurdles, with a district 4-best time of 15.60.
1A
Tenino is sending three representatives to Cheney on the boys side. Senior Nihls Peterson will be competing in the high jump and 110 hurdles.
2A
Rochester’s Journey Fortner enters the state meet in the boys javelin with a mark of 166 feet, 11 inches that was good for first at the District 4 meet. Fortner is also competing in the discuss.
W.F. West javelin thrower Kendra Bottenberg will also be looking for a podium finish. Bottenberg’s district-winning throw of 118-7 ranks her second heading into the state meet.
