LONGVIEW — Rachel Wilkerson and Carissa Kaut competed in the District 4 2A girls tennis championship match here on Saturday, but came up short to finish in second place.

Washougal’s Rebecca Boylan and Beyonce Bea won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to remain undefeated this season.

It was definitely a state caliber match and I think both teams are prepared for the state level now,” Centralia’s Deb Keahey said. “Both teams are very athletic and each set came down to a few crucial points in a few crucial games. Washougal had the upper hand today in capitalizing on our missed opportunities. It was a fun match to watch and a good motivator for our girls.”

W.F. West had a trio of players qualify for the state tournament, including Sydney Cameron in singles.

Cameron faced Columbia River’s Faith Grisham in the district singles championship, with Grisham winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

“The competition was really good. Faith is the defending champion and she said it was the first time she’d really been challenged,” W.F. West coach Jack State said.

In doubles, Megan Wilks and Mya Davis began the day in the consolation semifinals against Rylee Erdwins and Emily Johnson. Davis and Wilks won 6-2, 6-2 for a spot in the consolation finals.

Davis and Wilks faced Tumwaters’ Sophia Koelsch and Abby Bond in the consolation finals and prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) for the third and final spot into the state tournament.

The Bearcats finished second as a team in districts.

Wilkerson, Kaut, Cameron, Wilks and Davis will compete at state on Friday and Saturday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

Note: Tenino’s Ally Vestal and Kaylee Schow earned a spot in the State 1A girls tennis tournament and will play at the Yakima Tennis Club on Friday and Saturday.
