SEATTLE — W.F. West’s Sydney Cameron and Jisu Han earned third place at the State 2A girls tennis tournament here on Saturday.
The duo began the day in the semifinals against Sequim’s Jessica Dietzman and Kalli Wiker, falling in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
“We had a few opportunities in the first set we didn’t capitalize on. I thought the first set could have easily been ours,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “...They (Dietzman and Wiker) were very solid throughout the whole tournament, they didn’t make any mistakes at all.”
The loss put the doubles pair into the third place match against a familiar foe in Tumwater’s Sophia Koelsch and Abby Bond, earning a win in two sets, 6-3, 7-5, to claim the bronze medal.
“I thought that Sydney and Jisu played very well. I thought they were a little nervous at times and that made them be a little tentative,” State said. “They made the good plays at the right times. Third in doubles is as high as any team we’ve ever had and we were one point out of third place as far as a team goes. Great year, league champions again.”
After another solid year on the court, State was able to put the season into perspective.
“These kids have basically been working towards this. We didn’t know if we were going to be singles or doubles,” State said. “Once we decided to go with doubles, they worked really hard to prepare to be one of the top teams in the state. We felt like we would be one of the top teams and I thought the kids did a really nice job.”
Tenino’s Kaylee Schow and Ally Vestal made it to day two of the 1A girls doubles tournament, falling to University Prep’s Audrey Anderson and Lindsey Walters in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, to earn seventh place.
