KELSO — Ashley Schow recorded a double-double for the Beavers but it wasn’t enough as Montesano won 59-51 in a District 4 1A Girls Basketball Tournament consolation game here on Saturday.
Montesano advances to the third place game against La Center on Monday at 2 p.m. at King’s Way Christian for the third and final spot into regionals.
Ashley Schow scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kaylee Schow tallied 23 points in her final prep basketball game.
Zoe Hutchings led all scorers with 27 points and Lexi Lovell added 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Montesano shot 47 percent from the field while Tenino shot just 38 percent.
The Beavers led 20-13 after one quarter but Montesano battled back in the second quarter to cut the lead to 35-31 at halftime. Tenino managed just eight points in the final two quarter to allow the Bulldogs to take the lead and end the Beavers’ season.
It was the final prep basketball game for Charlie Letts, Rhian Mathis and Schow. Tenino ended the season 15-8 overall.
Rainier Edges Toledo
ROCHESTER — Toledo held Rainier’s Kaeley Schultz to 18 points, but the Mountaineers were still able to prevail 44-40 in a District 4 2B Girls Basketball Tournament game here on Saturday.
The win ends Toledo’s season. Rainier will move into the regional round of the state tournament and play next Friday or Saturday.
Kyleigh Holmes had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in her final prep basketball game. Kal Schaplow led the Indians with 15 points and seven rebounds. Stacie Spahr scored six points to go with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Faith Boesch added 17 points for the Mountaineers.
Toledo coach Brian Layton said the game plan was to hold Schultz under 20 points to give Toledo a chance down the stretch.
“We gave it a pretty good effort. We lost track of Boesch in the first half, and we had a tough time putting the ball in the basket,” Layton said. “We didn’t shoot very well. That was our goal, to limit Schultz. She had 36 against us and our goal was to keep her under 20 and we thought we’d have a chance and we did. We had our chances.”
Rainier shot 40 percent from the field while Toledo shot just 20 percent, although the Indians won the rebounding battle, 36-29.
Toledo graduates just one senior in Kyleigh Holmes.
“She was a big part of our season and a great leader this season. We’re definitely going to miss her,” Layton said.
Toledo finished the season 16-8 overall. With just one senior graduating, the future is bright in Toledo.
“We’re really excited. Hopefully they get the basketball bug and put time in from now until next season,” Layton said. “They’re really coachable. They put time in and improve. I think our league is young as a whole, it will be a dog fight next year as well.”
