Saturday's Boys BB: Dean Goes Off as Cards Rock Three Rivers Christian

WINLOCK — Wyatt Dean had a career scoring night wrapped up in the first quarter, and Winlock beat Three Rivers Christian 68-20 here Saturday in nonleague boys basketball action.

Dean scored 19 of his game- and career-high 31 points in the first quarter, after which Winlock led 25-1.

“We were ready to play. It was a little bit better energy than we had Wednesday on the road (at Ocosta),” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “It was a pretty good crowd. We just got going early and Three Rivers wasn’t ready for it.”

Dean went 12 of 21 from the field, and his points came primarily inside.

“He snuck out to the 3-point line a couple times, but we kind of made it a point of emphasis to get the ball inside to him and a couple post players,” Bamer said. “Most of the time it was get it up the court and pound it inside.”

The Cardinals led 41-2 at halftime and didn’t allow a field goal until the third quarter.

“It was just a team effort. Everybody that got in played hard and played well,” Bamer said. “We’ve been focusing on defense and I thought that showed quite a bit.”

Winlock (1-1) plays at Wahkiakum on Tuesday and hosts Kalama on Thursday.

Warriors Drop Rival Beavers 59-40

ROCHESTER — Noah Escott led three players in double figures, and Rochester jumped out on rival Tenino early and never let up in a 59-40 boys hoops win here Saturday night.

Escott scored 22 points, while Stephen Robinson added 11 and Keegan Goldrick chipped in 10 for the Warriors.

“We’re counting on him to be one of our scoring leaders. He can shoot it, take it to the hole, and get to the free-throw line,” Rochester coach Mark Goldrick said of Escott, a 6-foot-4 guard. “All those things kind of happened last night. He’s doing what we need him to do, and the cool thing so far is we’re getting two, or three, or four other guys scoring, as well.”



Rochester led 18-7 after a quarter and stretched the lead to 31-19 at halftime.

Yngwie Dowies led Tenino with 17 points, but no other Beaver scored more than 4.

“I was pretty proud of the effort, for one,” Goldrick said. “We played hard, and we executed pretty well. … We’re scoring quite a few points and still not shooting a great percentage, so it’s kind of encouraging in a way.”

Rochester (2-1) plays at Montesano on Tuesday and hosts Morton-White Pass on Friday. Tenino (0-2) hosts Shelton Monday.

Robles Leads Toledo to Win in Debut

TOLEDO — Toledo had three players in double figures and hit over 50 percent from the field in a 70-46 nonleague win over 1A Castle Rock here Saturday night.

The game was the Indians’ season-debut, pushed back a few days thanks to the extended football season.

Carmen Robles scored 16 points with eight rebounds, Reece Wallace scored 16 and Joe Wallace added 13 for Toledo — including a dunk early in the fourth quarter.

The Indians led 35-27 at halftime, but outscored the Rockets 21-11 to win going away.

“It was a good first game,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “Castle Rock’s only going to get better.”

Gabe Fuentes held the Rockets’ high-scoring guard Bryce DesArmo to 13 points, and Junior Arroyo added 6 points and nine boards for Toledo.

Toledo (1-0) plays at Ilwaco Monday night.
