Prep Wrestling: Bearcats Win Sub-Regional Tournament

The host Bearcats had three champions and came out on top Saturday at the Evergreen 2A Conference Sub-Regional Wrestling Tournament in Chehalis.

Damon Thomas, Michael Matagi and Michael Anderson were all winners for the Bearcats. Thomas, at 138 pounds, beat teammate Logan Sigler 14-3 in the finals; Matagi, at 145, beat Tumwater’s Colter Jacobsen 5-0 in the finals; and Anderson, at 152, beat Centralia’s Tristan Dickey with a first-round pin in the finals.

Top-ranked Joe Finch was a champion for Centralia, taking first at 182 with a 7-3 win over W.F. West’s Brenden Spahr to improve his season record to 34-2.

“He has looked really dominant all year, and we look forward to him carrying his momentum into regionals and state,” Centralia coach Scott Phillips said.

Also placing for W.F. West were Roehre Cunningham (second, 106); Levi Walters (second, 113); Franklin Taylor (third, 113); Ethan Lund (third, 120); Will Alexander (third, 126); Jacob Nowels (fourth, 132); Eliu Matagi (third, 152); Drew Alexander (third, 160); Wyatt Deskins (fifth, 170); Daniel Barber (fifth, 182); Braden Bostwick (second, 195); Tyler Pallas (third, 220); Nathaniel Gluck (fourth, 220); and Hunter Arredondo (second, 285).

Centralia’s Mykka McAllister was second at 120, Andrew Anderson was four at 126, Aaron Adamo was third at 170, and Fernando Arevalo was fourth at 170.

McAllister was leading his final match 8-2 against Rochester’s Jacob Paris before Paris caught him in a cradle hold in the third round and held on for the pin, Phillips said.

Rochester’s Gabe Vazquez finished fourth at 132.

The Bearcats, Tigers and Warriors advance to the Region 3 Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Shorecrest, with the top four placers in each weight class moving on to the state tournament.

Five Locals Finish First at District 2B Tourney

ILWACO — A pair of Adna wrestlers and one each from Napavine, Winlock and Toledo finished first here Saturday at the District 4 2B Wrestling Tournament.

Adna finished third as a team, with both finalists in the 145-pound weight class and the 132 class.

Adna’s Matthew Slape and Corbin Balzer finished first and second, respectively, at 132, with Slape pinning his teammate in 1:19. Also for the Pirates, freshman Ashton Dowell was a champion at 145, pinning teammate Levi Becker in 1:24 in the finals.

Balzer avenged a loss to Ocosta’s Sam Quinby in the semifinals.

“Corbin not only wrestled his best technical match of the year, but also his smartest match of the year,” Adna coach Craig Ferrier said. “It was a bit nerve wracking, but a lot of fun to watch.”

Aaron Slape was second at 126, Braxton Dowell took second at 132, and teammate Luke Wellander was fourth in the same weight class for the Pirates. Tanner Fields was fifth at 160, and teammate Skyler Smith was fifth at 220.

The top six wrestlers in each weight class move on to the regional tournament on Saturday, which will be hosted by the Pirates.



Toldeo’s Dalton Yoder won the 220 bracket, beating Ocosta’s Byron Horngell with a 12-2 major decision in the finals.

Napavine’s Ian Bowen was a champion at 120, pinning Ocosta’s Kaleb Orton in 32 seconds in the finals, and Winlock’s Seth Lindsey won at 182, pinning Ocosta’s Hayden Hoff in the finals.

Onalaska’s Colton Brown was fourth at 113, and Napavine’s Aydan Costin took second at 170.

Toledo’s Alex Palermo finished sixth at 182, while Alfonso Carpenter was fourth at 195 and Seth Nichols was third at 285.

Tigers Second at Girls Sub-Regionals

ILWACO — Centralia had four winners and finished second here Saturday in the girls District 4 Sub-Regional Wrestling Tournament.

Aberdeen won the overall team event with 174 points, while Centralia finished at 117. W.F. West was fourth with 93 points, and Napavine was fifth with 75.

Centralia’s Veronica Chigo took first at 105, and teammate Samantha Teitzel pinned Napavine’s Billie Bergeson in the 125 finals for a win. Tyler Jorgenson also won for Centralia, going 3-0 with a pin in the 140 finals.

Sidnee Arcury was another winner for Centralia, with a first-round pin in the 145 finals, and Jordan Christin took second at 155 for the Tigers.

“Our girls were very dominant the entire tournament,” Centralia coach Scott Phillips said. “We are looking forward to what they can do at regionals.”

Napavine’s Tempprince Gibbons won at 120, winning all three of her matches via pin. Kaitlyn Bornstein also won for Napavine, notching a 15-second pin in the 135 finals.

Toledo’s Josey Delaney won the 235 bracket, with a 34-second pin in the finals.

W.F. West’s Darlene Bautista was second at 110, Alexis Dodd was third at 115, Cassanda Shipman was second at 130, Jade Palmer was third at 135.

Tenino’s Kalyn Filby was third at 105, and teammate Yvette Rodriguez was second at 170.

Rochester’s Morgan Ware was fourth at 115.

Rebekah Adams was fifth at 130 for Napavine, while Toledo’s Rebekah Johnson took fourth at 130.

The girls Region 3 tournament will be held at Aberdeen on Saturday, with the top four wrestlers in each weight class moving on to state.
