Monday's Prep Girls Soccer: Loggers Lay Waste to Tigers

NAPAVINE – Onalaska jumped on the Tigers early here Monday and then added on late in order to secure a thorough 5-1 victory in Central 2B League girls soccer action.

The win should serve as notice to the rest of the league that the Loggers are for real and they are coming to chop foes down, and maybe ask questions later, if curiosity happens to strike their fancy.

“I think we did a great job passing the ball tonight. It looked really good,” said Onalaska coach Chris Van Clifford.

One of those passes, off the foot of Becca Griel, led directly to Onalaska’s first score of the evening when she fed Savannah Gifford for a goal in the fourth minute of play. Less than ten minutes later the Loggers were extending their lead thanks to a goofy-footed goal by Adallee Sabin that was assisted by Hayli Howard.

On the flip side, Napavine was able to muster only one shot on goal in the first half, and took three shots total, as Onalaska’s midfielders and defenders played a soft-touch game of keep away all night.

“In our starting situation we are pretty good at pressing the ball and keeping it upfield,” confirmed Van Clifford.

The few times that the ball did wind up in the hands of Onalaska goalkeeper Alex Cleveland-Barrera she utilized her booming right leg to quickly send the ball bounding back into Napavine territory.

“Alex is a freshman and a fantastic goalie,” said Van Clifford. “It’s great to be able to rely on her.”

Onalaska defender Callie Lawrence agreed with her coach’s assessment of their sure handed and big booted goalie.

“Alex is pretty great. She’s had a lot of good stops for us when we play tough teams. She’s awesome,” said Lawrence.

After intermission Onalaska used the first 15 minutes of the half to employ their bench liberally while moving players around to different positions for a fresh look. After 27 minutes of fruitless back and forth Autumn Russ got the Loggers going again with a break away goal in the 67th minute. Seven minutes later Russ punched in another goal to extend the Onalaska lead to 4-0.

Sydney Burdick got the Tigers on the board in the 77th minute with a goal from inside the keeper box but Onalaska’s Payton Anderson answered right back in stoppage time with a goal of her own that established the final tally.

When asked what had contributed to her team’s wire-to-wire domination on the night Lawrence echoed a similar sentiment as her coach

“I think our passing was pretty important. We’ve really been focusing on just getting a crisp clean pass to our teammates,” said Lawrence

Onalaska (4-2) will host Life Christian Academy next Monday. Napavine (2-3) will visit Life Christian on Wednesday.

Pirates Pass Their Way Past Kalama

KALAMA – Adna went on the road to inhospitable territory Monday night and escaped with a 2-0 win over the Chinooks in a key Central 2B League showdown.

Both teams came into the night undefeated and in a tie for first place. After the Pirate’s shutout of the Chinooks they have solidified their place at the top of the C2BL totem pole until, or if, a team can manage to knock them off.

Adna posted its first goal in the 16th minute when Rachel Burke found the back of the net off of a pass from Jordyn Swenson.

“Swenson came up from on defense and made a great cross to Rachel on the backside,” said Adna coach Juli Aselton. “It was beautiful. She just kicked it right back in.”

That 1-0 advantage lasted through the intermission until the Pirate’s added on in the 61st minute with a goal by Cierra Swenson that was assisted by Payton Aselton.

“It was a very good game. It was a tough game. Kalama packed the box and didn’t let us in very much. We really had to work on our passing in order to get the ball around their defensive wall,” noted Coach Aselton. “Our best shots were when we did our good passing,”

Aselton added that her goalkeeper, Makaela Meister, had a perfect night but only faced three shots all game long.

“She had a really nice one. One of Kalama’s girls had a free kick and she kicked a nice long one and Makaela jumped up high and she just grabbed onto that ball at the top of the bar and held onto it. It was a great stop,” said Aselton.

The Pirates’ coach credited her defense for their fastidious rebuff of the Chinooks.

“Our defense definitely got a work out tonight,” said Aselton in specific reference to Brynn Arrington, Olivia Rodriguez, Jordyn Swenson, and Keaton Dowell. “As for players of the game I’d have to give that to my four defenders. They really covered up for each other.”

Aselton said that Kalama’s Melanie Martinez stood out as a uniquely talented player who has a knack for sneaking into key position without being detected until she is already making moves and causing a panic for opposing defenses.

“We weren’t really sure between Ocosta and Kalama which team would be a little bit tougher. We knew that they had some decent forwards and scorers but we were definitely looking forward to the challenge,” said Aselton. “That’s what we needed. It was a good challenge that will help to get us better.”

Adna (5-0) will host Winlock on Wednesday.

Ocosta Defeats Winlock

WINLOCK — Ocosta scored two goals in each the first and second half to defeat Winlock 4-0 in a Central 2B League girls soccer match here on Monday.

The Wildcats’ Teal Mitby scored in the 15th minute followed by Trinity White in the 20th minute for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

White scored her second of the night in the 56th minute, and Mikayla Ness finished the scoring in the 65th minute for Ocosta.

Ocosta outshot Winlock 15-10, and Cardinal coach Brian Ziese felt the game was closer than the score indicated.

“The game could have been a lot closer than it was, a lot of chances,” Ziese said. “It was not too overwhelming. We just couldn’t convert on our 1-on-1’s. There were youthful mistakes.”

Ziese noted the performance of 8th grade goalkeeper Kiya Peppers, entering the game late and making five saves for the Cardinals.

Winlock (2-4) travels to Adna on Wednesday for a C2BL game.
