ONALASKA — Onalaska’s pitching was in midseason form here against Pe Ell-Willapa Valley on Monday as the Loggers won 4-0 in a non-league baseball game.
Tristen Lawrence threw four scoreless innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Tanner McClean, Kayden Allison, Matt Kurzeika and AJ Volk all saw time on the mound to combine for the shutout while allowing just two walks and four hits.
Matt Kurzeika scored two runs and Ashton Haight also had a run.
Max Smith and Kollin Jurek each had a hit for the Titans.
It was a scoreless contest until the fifth inning when AJ Volk hit a single to bring home Kurzeika for for a 1-0 lead after five innings. Kurzeika, Haight and Carter Whitehead were all able to score in the sixth inning to secure the win for the Loggers.
“I thought we played really well for the first ballgame. We played error-free baseball, we only had to get 21 outs,” Onalaska coach Rocky Stanley said. “The pitching was spectacular. Two walks, so that’s a good ballgame.”
Stanley said he was particularly pleased with the starting pitching from Lawrence.
Onalaska (1-0) travels to Toutle Lake on Tuesday for a Central 2B League game. PWV (0-1) travels to Raymond on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Centralia Dominates Timberline in Opener
LACEY — The Tigers belted 12 hits against Timberline to earn a 12-3 win in a non-league baseball game here on Monday.
Centralia’s Jeremy Wood had two hits and an RBI and Cameron Erickson added two hits including a double to go with two RBI’s. Dom Aguirre also had two hits with a double and three RBI’s.
Derek Beairsto, Cameron Cabrera and Jeremy Wood combined on the mound to allow three runs on seven hits with one walk in a solid pitching performance.
Timberline led 2-1 after two innings before the Tigers scored six runs in the third inning. Centralia added two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the victory.
“We’re breaking in some new guys. We got contributions from a lot of guys, especially in the third and fourth,” Centralia coach Rex Ashmore said. “I’m proud of the way our kids approached the game today and they played pretty well today.”
Centralia (1-0) travels to Seaside, Ore., to compete in a tournament and will face Hoquiam on Friday at 6 p.m. in the tournament opener.
Rainier Holds Off Tenino in Extras
TENINO — Tenino and Rainier needed extra innings to decide the opening game of the season. The teams combined for five runs in the final inning with the Mountaineers holding off a comeback attempts for a 4-3 win in a non-league baseball game on Monday.
Ryan Deoskey was 2 for 5 with an RBI and came on and pitched four innings in relief work on the mound for the Beavers.
“Bratton, Deoskey threw well for us. That was good to see,” Tenino coach Ryan Schlesser said. “It sucks because we lost to Rainier. It still stings a bit to lose to those guys.”
Schlesser was pleased with the Beavers’ performance on the mound and was pleased with the overall performance of Deoskey.
Tenino scored in the fifth inning to break up the scoreless tie. Rainier scored in the seventh to even the score and send the game to extra innings.
The Mountaineers scored three runs in the top of the ninth for a 4-1 lead. Blake Gubbe started off the bottom of the inning with a single followed by an Abe Nelson walk and a bunt to move the runners over. Back-to-back infield hits brought home Gubbe and Nelson to cut the lead to 4-3. With runners on second and third, Rainier was able to secure the final out to claim the victory.
“For a second there, I thought we were going to come back and beat them but we fell a little short,” Schlesser said. “That’s what happens when you give up three in the ninth.”
Tenino (0-1) travels to Rochester on Thursday for a non-league game.
Bulldogs Take Warriors for Walk
MONTESANO — Rochester’s bats weren’t able to wake up in time for their first game of the season here on Monday as they dropped a non-league baseball contest to Montesano to the tune of 8-2.
The first three innings were a scoreless affair, although both starting pitchers wound up in bases loaded jams in the first frame before wiggling free from harm. Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said it was a classic opening day start situation, noting “It looked like everybody’s first outing.”
Keegan Goldrick started the game on the hill for Rochester and didn’t allow a run. Bodey Smith entered the game in the third inning and surrendered a pair of runs. The Bulldogs then plated six runners in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach of the sleepy Warriors bats.
Nolan Eyles pitched the fourth and fifth innings for Rochester and Jayden Lancaster pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Montesano pounded out a dozen hits in the game while the Warriors committed a pair of errors to compound their problems.
“The two errors came at not a great time and we had two balls in the outfield that we probably should have had, too,” said Quarnstrom.
Quarnstrom added that his game plan was to pitch a handful of his players in the game, no matter how things panned out.
“That was the plan. I wasn’t going to let anybody throw more than 40-45 pitches tops,” Quarnstrom said. “Jayden Lancaster, he’s kind of been a project in progress for us but he came in and did a fine job for us.”
Tyler Soderback had the biggest of Rochester’s three hits on the night with a 2-run home run in the sixth inning that scored Smith.
Quarnstrom lamented that his team was punched out looking too many times in the game, with seven strikeouts total.
Rochester (0-1) will host Tenino on Thursday at 4 p.m. in a non-league game.
Saturday’s Results
Monarchs Mash Toledo Hurlers
LONGVIEW — Eliminate a whiplash inducing fourth inning from the equation and Toledo had themselves an opening day to remember here on Saturday. Unfortunately, as Toledo coach Jeff Davis pointed out, that’s not how it works and his team wound up falling 12-6 to Mark Morris in non-league baseball play.
The Monarchs erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to forget and wrapped out 11 hits on the day in total. That hit parade included a homerun by Jack Shipley that indicated the junior’s swing is already in midseason form.
One media outlet estimated the home run at more than 380 feet. Davis remembered it a different way.
“Shipley hit a homerun that’s still out there traveling somewhere. It was a pretty good shot to left-center,” said Davis.
Ryan Bloomstrom started on the mound for Toledo before being replaced by Hunter Holmes. Jesse Towns then took the hill before handing the ball over to Brannan Guyor who ceded the hill in turn to Kaden Sellards for the sixth inning of work.
Davis said that it was his plan all along to get a look at as many pitchers as possible. He just wished there hadn’t been quite so many free passes and errors mixed in. By his count, his team had four errors in the field and at least eight walks or hit batters.
“That’s too many for me,” Davis noted.
Davis added that despite the loss he was happy with the way his team swung the bat. Guyor led Toledo with a double and a single while Hunter Eaton added a pair of singles. Davis noted that Bryce Marcil was among several players who added one hit each.
“We had a freshman come up and get his first hit. He was one for one. Pretty good way to start the season for him coming off the bench,” said Davis of Justin Villa. “I was glad we were able to bunch up some hits and get a few runs and at least say hey we’re trying to crawl back into this thing after they’d scored a lot of runs.”
Toledo (0-1) will face Adna on Tuesday at home and will travel to Rainier on Thursday.
