Monday's Girls Basketball: Bearcats Extend Win Streak to Five Games

LONGVIEW — Annika Waring scored a game-high 17 points and W.F West won its fifth-consecutive game with a 51-44 nonleague victory over Kelso at the Martin Luther King Basketball Tribute at Lower Columbia College Monday night.

Drea Brumfield added 13 points and eight rebounds, Taya McCallum knocked in nine points and Madi Mencke contributed five in the win. Waring also tallied six boards, four assists and four steals in a sterling performance.

It was the Bearcats’ first game after upsetting previously-unbeaten Tumwater 57-47 Thursday, where they snapped the Thunderbirds’ 12-game win streak.

W.F. West overcame an off night shooting from beyond the arc, going just 4 of 14 from long range at a 29 percent clip. Brumfield was the most effective, draining 2 of 5 from deep, while Waring and McCallum each hit 3s.

Instead they capitalized inside, with Brumfield and Waring snatching boards and knocking in shots from the paint, as the BearCats shot 43 percent from the field.

W.F West forced 21 Highlander turnovers and snatched 15 steals while giving the ball up 14 times on offense. Vadala swiped a game-high five steals for W.F. West.

The Bearcats improved to 10-4, 3-1 and will look to keep their win streak going when they host Black Hills at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Tenino Thumps Class 2A Aberdeen in Nonleague Clash

ABERDEEN — Tenino’s deployed a tenacious defense, limiting Aberdeen to just 22 percent shooting on the night, and the Beavers romped to a 58-39 nonleague win over the Bobcats Monday night on the road.

“We came out and really got at it defensively,” Tenino coach Scott Ashmore said.

Sophomore duo Ashley Schow and Megan Letts each scored a game-high 18 points for the streaking Beavers, who have no won five of their last six and improve to 5-7, 1-1.

Schow, a 6-foot-1 post, fellow sophomore forward Alivia Hunter, who scored 11 points, dominated inside for the Beavers, limiting Bobcats’ (4-10) standout forward Aliyah Tageant to 14 points.

“[Tangeant] really hurt us inside,” Ashmore said. “She’s a tough rebounder.”

Most of Tenino’s shots came from within two to three feet of the basket, as the Beavers shot 54 percent from the floor, were patient and moved the ball well to create open looks in the frontcourt, Ashmore said.

Tenino will look to remain hot when they host Forks (5-7, 0-3) in a 1A Evergreen match at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Tigers Overpowered on the Road by Thunderbirds

TUMWATER — Carissa Kaut and Jayden Hawley scored all the points for the Tigers but it wasn’t enough to keep up with a high-powered, one-loss Tumwater team in a 63-22 2A Evergreen road loss Monday night

Kaut, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, notched a double-double for the Tigers with a team-high 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Hawley, a sophomore guard, added the rest of the nine points.

It was the fifth loss in the last six games for a troubled Tigers squad that was under siege from the red-hot 13-1, 3-1 Thunderbirds. The Tigers fell to 4-10, 1-3 with the loss.

After surrendering 41 first-half points, the Tigers recovered a bit to hold the Thunderbirds to just 10 points in the third quarter and four in the final frame.

“They took it easy on us,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “We did play a little harder in the second half.”

Centralia shot just 26 percent from the field on 9 of 35 shooting and struggled to get open looks against Tumwater’s vaunted defense. Ashmore is hoping the Tigers can string together four full quarters of strong each game as they head into the last third of the regular season slate.

“As we move forward we have to work hard at playing 32 minutes of basketball and play hard every minute,” Ashmore said. “Right now we’re playing in spurts.”

The Tigers next host Rochester (8-6, 1-3) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
