Junior Legion: Chehalis Hits, But Splits With Capital

OLYMPIA — When the wood turned to aluminum, Sobe-Toyota Post 69 began dropping bombs. Colton Watson hit a pair of homers, and Devon Merriman totaled five hits for Chehalis in Junior Legion baseball action here Tuesday against Capital.

But the team would’ve won both of its games against Capital here Tuesday night if not for a lapse in the fifth inning off in Game 2, as Sobe-Toyota split with the Olympia team 12-0, 7-5.

“After scoring 16 runs to their 0, they kind of lulled us to sleep a little bit,” Sobe-Toyota assistant Scott Chamberlain said. “They didn’t have overpowering pitching, but they threw strikes.

“We didn’t go to sleep, but we didn’t keep the intensity up and pressure on,” the coach added.

Watson’s home runs came in his first two at-bats of the day, the first (solo) and third innings (2-run), respectively. He ended Game 1 with 5 RBIs.

“Obviously playing with aluminum bats helped Colton Watson today,” quipped Chamberlain, whose team had 13 hits in Game 1.

Merriman was one of three players in Game 1 to have two hits, along with Cooper Zurfluh and Keylen Steen, and he went a perfect 3 for 3 — accounting for half the team’s hits — in Game 2.

Kyle Shepherd started in the win, striking out eight, walking three and allowing four hits.

“He did a good job of keeping them off-balance,” Chamberlain said.

But the story was different in Game 2, as Sobe-Toyota jumped out to a 4 run lead in the second, before Capital scored 7 runs in the fifth.

Sobe-Toyota (5-6) plays at River Ridge tonight at 6 p.m.
