Winlock Falls to Kalama

WINLOCK — Winlock had some foul trouble early and Kalama took advantage, earning a 42-24 win over the Cardinals in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Friday.

Madison Lofberg led the Cardinals with 10 points. Cheleena Squibb scored eight points and Karlie Jones added six points. Jenna Jones grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Winlock and Kalama were knotted at four after the first quarter. Squibb recorded two fouls and was forced to sit in the second quarter, and the Chinooks took advantage, scoring 15 points and taking a 19-10 lead at halftime.

“First quarter, I thought our defense was great. We got great looks, couldn’t knock them down,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “We played without Cheleena in the second with two fouls. The past three games, we’ve looked to her to score some points. She’s the backbone of our defense and that hurt us.”

The Cardinals played better and cut the Kalama lead to 24-18 going into the fourth quarter. The Chinooks were able to knock down some late 3-pointers to seal the win.

The Cardinals had 34 turnovers in the loss.

“It all came down to we didn’t take care of the basketball. We have a hard time finding the rim, we’re so young and inexperienced. We made some good strides,” Nelson said.

Nelson also noted that Lofberg showed some much needed offensive confidence against Kalama.

Winlock (1-3, 0-2) will try to bounce back today at 1 p.m., traveling to Ocosta for nonleague game.

Vikings Take Down Ducks

MOSSYROCK — Mossyrock scored 22 points in the second quarter to push the Vikings to a 48-25 win over Toutle Lake in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Friday night.

Ava Nelson scored 16 points to lead the Vikings. Heather Edgar got the start tonight and made it count, recording a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Paige Moorcroft grabbed 18 rebounds to lead Mossyrock.

The Vikings held an 8-3 lead after one quarter, but the 22 point second quarter helped Mossyrock take a 30-15 lead into halftime.

“We started pressing, it got our blood pumping a little bit. We got some steals right off the bat, some quick lay-ins and that got us going,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “Steph and Andee in our press and half court were all over it. Steph has been consistent leading us, she’s been our point guard and the offense ran through her. Andee ate it up on defense and rebounding and getting put backs and running the floor.”

Mossyrock outscored Toutle Lake 18-10 in the second half.

The Vikings (3-1, 1-1) travel to Fort Vancouver on Monday for a nonleague game.

We need people to step up, still waiting for results on Darian. We have people stepping up, it was a great game by Payton.”

Adna (2-2, 1-1) hosts Rainier on Wednesday at 7:15 in a boys-girls league doubleheader. Onalaska (1-3, 1-1) travels to face Pe Ell on Wednesday in a C2BL matchup.

The Mules outscored the Indians 27-25 in the second half to cruise to the win.

Toledo (2-2, 1-1) travels across I-5 next Wednesday to face Winlock at 6 p.m. in a league game.

Timberwolves Slash Past Mountaineers

MORTON — Morton-White Pass didn’t allow Rainier to score double digits in any quarter as the Timberwolves won 51-18 in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Friday.

The Timberwolves were shorthanded without Taylor Nilius and Shaylee Peters, but the big contributions from Smathers and Dotson helped MWP earn the win.

“Smathers had a great game. She kept out of foul trouble and she just had an all around really good game,” MWP coach Tom Griffith said. “We only had two subs on the bench for the most part. We got through the game anyway. The girls played hard. It was just one of those game where we worked really hard on the glass.”

MWP (2-2, 2-0) hosts Napavine on Wednesday in a Central 2B League game in Randle.
