2B Boys: Toledo Rolls Past South Bend in Playoff Debut

Posted

TOLEDO — The Indians were a bit short-staffed here Monday night, but it didn’t make much of a difference in the end.

With leading scorer Reece Wallace out with the flu, Toledo crashed the boards and worked past South Bend, 55-27, in the first round of the District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament.

Joe Wallace scored 15 points, Conner Vermilyea added 14, and Toledo racked up 47 rebounds while giving South Bend — also the Indians — just 17.

Toledo led 27-16 at halftime.

“Without Reece — the guy with the ball in his hands a lot of times — we had to adjust and adapt,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “(Jared) Pohll and (Joe) Wallace ran the point, and it took a couple mental lapses before we ironed the bugs out and things started working.”

Junior Arroyo led Toledo with 16 rebounds, while Fano Arceo-Hansen came off the bench to grab 12.

“(South Bend) played hard. They kind of crashed the boards, and they had little guys that played hard, really,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “The ball didn’t bounce their way, and after Adna, I was pretty adamant about rebounding.”

Toledo was coming off of a 75-65 loss to Adna in its regular season finale on Friday. The Indians (16-5) will now face Adna again on Saturday, in the district quarterfinals. The winner seals a spot in the regional playoffs.

Note: The time and site of Saturday’s game is expected to be announced on Wednesday.32/63

MWP Shuts Down Seagulls in First Quarter, Win 66-32

RANDLE — Getting out of the gate in the postseason proved to be no problem for the Timberwolves, who blanked the Pacific 2B League’s No. 8 seed in the first quarter en route to a 66-32 District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament first-round victory here on Monday night.

Matt Poquette led the way with 16 of his 24 points in the first quarter to help put away Raymond early.

“It’s time now to get focused early and you can’t have any lapses in the playoffs,” Morton-White Pass coach Tony Gillispie said.

Braiden Elledge, who has been nursing a sore ankle, snagged four steals in the first quarter and the Timberwolf defense took over and led the way to a 25-0 lead after just one stanza.

“We really focused on getting the ball in the paint and Matt had his way in there,” Gillispie said. “Our guys did a good job passing.”

Elledge finished with three assists, while Kaleb Poquette posted 9 points. Cameron Hart and Gage LaClef each had 8 points for Morton-White Pass.

Morton-White Pass (20-1) will play Chief Leschi on Saturday at a venue and time yet to be determined.

Rigdon, Trotter Lead Adna Past Hyaks

OCEAN SHORES — Garrett Trotter took over the first half and Tanner Rigdon did the honors after halftime as Adna knocked off North Beach, 75-63, here Monday night in the opening round of the District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament.

Trotter scored 21 of his 23 points in the first half, while Rigdon scored 16 of his game-high 26 in the second half.

The Pirates led 36-31 at halftime — after giving up 20 points in the first quarter — and got an additional 8 points from Preston Ashley.

“It was a game of runs,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “They came out and hit a bunch of shots, and we didn’t get many stops in the first quarter.”

Adna outrebounded the Hyaks — the No. 3 seed out of the Pacific 2B League — 34-16. Brody Cearley led North Beach with 18 points.

The win puts Adna (12-9) in the district quarterfinals, with a Saturday matchup against Toledo. Adna split games with the Indians during the regular season, most recently winning 75-65 in Adna on Friday.

“It’s going to be an absolute battle, like the last two were,” Salme said. “It’ll be everything a district game should be.”

The time and site of Saturday’s game is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Stanley Dominant in Tigers’ Win

NAPAVINE — Wyatt Stanley had a monster game, and Napavine crushed Ilwaco, 71-39, here Monday night in the first round of the District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament.

Stanley, the Tigers’ junior forward, scored a game-high 27 points with 24 rebounds and eight assists.

“Wyatt was a monster. I think that’s the single best performance I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” Napavine coach Rex Stanley said. “If Wyatt does that, we’re going to be tough to beat.”

Napavine jumped out to a 21-6 lead after a quarter, and outrebounded the Fishermen by a 43-15 margin.

“They’re the type of team that could get kind of streaky shooting, so we focused in on giving them one shot and one shot only,” Stanley said, adding that Ilwaco had just two offensive rebounds in the game. “They were able to do that.”

Chase Van Wyck added 14 points, and Austin Filley scored 11 for the Tigers.

Napavine (15-6) will now take on fourth-ranked Life Christian Academy (20-2) on Saturday in the district quarterfinals.

“We’ve seen a little bit of them. It’s going to be a tough game,” Stanley said. “But if you get into a game to get into regionals, you’re going to get that.”

The time and site of the Napavine-Life Christian game is expected to be announced Wednesday morning.

Kirkley, Vikings Stump Rainier

MOSSYROCK — Pacific 2B League No. 5 seed Rainier brought the pressure, but couldn’t contain Mossyrock’s Jaron Kirkley in the second half as the Vikings came away with the 52-43 District 4 Boys Basketball Tournament victory here on Monday.

Kirkley scored 23 of his 26 points after halftime, after the Vikings adjusted to the Mountaineers’ defensive pressure.

“They’re a pressure defense, especially in the halfcourt,” Mossyrock coach Kelly Ross said. “They were on us like white on rice. They didn’t give you an inch.”

While Mossyrock, the No. 4 seed out of the C2BL, turned the ball over just 11 times, they also weren’t afforded many open shots. The Vikings led just 19-18 at halftime.

“Jaron started to take over in the third quarter off of rebounds, putbacks and getting himself open,” Ross said. “They didn’t focus on him defensively so we had to adjust to that.”

Mossyrock led by 5 points after three quarters and Kirkley notched another 14 points in the fourth quarter. Danny Nelson also scored 15 points for the Vikings, while Bo Miles added 12 rebounds. Kikley led the team in rebounding with 13.

“It was a battle all the way through,” Ross said. “You’ve got to give Rainier a lot of credit. I’m happy that a game like this happened to our guys. It's our second season and it’s 0-0 now. Hopefully from here on out, we keep that mentality and we don’t look ahead.”

Rainier kept the pressure up on offense as well, attempting 30 3-point shots.

Mossyrock (15-6) will face Ocosta on Saturday at a location and time yet to be determined.

Ocosta Shoots Past Trojans 69-37

OCOSTA — Pacific 2B League runner-up Ocosta hit 10 3-pointers and downed Pe Ell 69-37 in District 4 2B Boys Basketball action here on Monday.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter and the Trojans could never cut back into the advantage.

“Being down 13 isn’t unachievable to come back from, but we could never get to within 13,” Pe Ell coach Justin Phelps said. “We did the necessary things to try and get back in but they’d hit a big shot or we’d turn it over.”

Ocosta was 10 of 19 from long range, with Kyle Bambauer leading the way with 17 points. Connor Pegg also went 7 for 7 from the field and finished with 16 points.

“It was hard to battle back and we didn’t do a good job limiting them to one shot,” Phelps said.

Pe Ell shot 28 percent from the field, with Tyler Shepherd leading the way with 9 points. Kaleb McCalden also had 8 points.

“If we could have shot around the same percentage as them it would have been a good game,” Phelps said.

Pe Ell (7-14) will face Rainier on Wednesday night in Rochester in a loser-out game at 6:30 p.m.

Life Christian Routs Onalaska

TACOMA — Pacific 2B League champ Life Christian didn’t waste much time jumping on Onalaska here Monday, putting away the Loggers early for a 57-21 District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament victory.

The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the latest state poll, led 22-5 after a quarter. Defending Pacific 2B League MVP Luke Lovelady led the way with 21 points and seven rebounds.

Jacob Modica led Onalaska with 11 points, but the Loggers turned the ball over 31 times.

“They zone trapped us, and went 1-3-1, and we just did not handle it well,” Logger coach Dennis Bower said. “When we could handle the pressure and get shots, we got layups, but it was few and far between.”

Life Christian (20-2) also got 11 points from C.J. Kovacs.

“I told the kids, we played hard all the way to the end,” Bower said. “We just could not pass and catch.”

Onalaska (5-16) will take on Ilwaco in a loser-out game Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m., in Montesano.
