2B Baseball: Pitching, Defense Lead PWV Past Winlock

WINLOCK — The Titans’ approach at the plate wasn’t quite up to their coaching staff’s expectations here Friday afternoon, but their pitching and defense was more than enough to carry Pe Ell-Willapa Valley past Winlock.

Frank Roonsburg hit a pair of doubles, Cub Bair retired the only eight batters he saw, and the Titans beat Winlock, 7-0, for their first Central 2B League win of the season.

“Defensively, and on the pitching mound, we were phenomenal,” PWV coach Kelly Barnum said, noting that his team has played error-free ball in both games this season. “Offensively, we’re still struggling. We’re timid at the plate, but it’s early in the season. We’re going to come around.”

Bair faced eight batters, used 30 pitches, struck out three and didn’t allow a baserunner in a starting effort before Barnum pulled the senior righthander to save him for weekend work.

“Cub put in a lot of offseason work,” Barnum said. “He’s really in midseason form right now.”

Winlock coach Jordan Nailon agreed.

“They showed they’ve got a number of arms, which should serve them well,” Nailon said. “It looked like they’ve got three or four guys that can throw strikes and toe the mound comfortably, and that might make some coaches envious.”

Donny Ward took over in the third inning for PWV and tossed two frames, walking one and striking out one without giving a hit before giving way to Hunter Hoke. The combination no-hitter lasted until the sixth inning, when Coleson Richendollar laced a double to right field — the Cards’ only hit of the afternoon.

“It was just a bit of a bad day. I’m not really sure why they had our number today,” Nailon said. “It’s still a little bit early. We spent a lot of time in the cage, but we haven’t seen a lot of live (pitching) — guys trying to get us out.”

Luke Gerow reached on an error to lead off the second inning, moved to third on a pair of walks and beat out the throw home on a slow infield grounder for PWV’s first run. Tyson Nissell then drove in two runs in the third inning with a hard single off pitcher Richendollar’s foot and into right field.

Roonsburg, who went 2 for 4, doubled in two more runs in the fourth, and the Titans scratched across two more in the seventh on a hit batter, another single from Nissell, an error, a walk, and an infield single by Ryon Ashley.

“Obviously, they’re a well-coached group. They took a couple bags, and it’s just the little stuff that stands out to me. They took a double on a regular looks-like-a-single off the bat, and kids don’t come across that stuff on their own,” Nailon said. “Someone must have taught them something.”

Anthony Clevenger relieved Richendollar in the third inning and struck out six, with one walk and three hits, to finish out the game.

Winlock (0-2) plays at Onalaska on Tuesday. Pe Ell-Willapa Valley (1-1) plays at Zillah on Saturday.

Burdick Powers Adna Past Toledo

TOLEDO — The Pirates scored all 12 of their runs in the final three innings of a 12-3 Central 2B League win over Toledo here Friday.

Sawyer Burdick went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and a three-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the way for Adna, and struck out six without a walk and one hit in 4 ⅓ innings of relief work on the mound to get the win.

Chance Fay went 2 for 4 and Cole Fay was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Pirates, while Trevor Minkoff went 1 for 4 and drove in two runs.

Toledo led 2-0 after an inning, thanks to a two-run double from Hunter Eaton. Kyle Bauter, Bryce Marcil, Tommy Kinsman, Christian Sanjuro and Gannon Madill all added hits for the Indians.

Adna (2-0) plays a nonleague game at Zillah at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Toledo (0-2) hosts Castle Rock at noon on Saturday in a nonleague game.

Mules Blank MWP

CATHLAMET — A few too many free passes hurt Morton-White Pass here Friday in a 12-0 C2BL baseball loss to Wahkiakum.

The Mules pushed across seven runs in the first inning, with three hits and five walks, and tacked on five runs in the third to get the win. James Anderson pitched the first three frames to get the victory.

Kade Gillispie went 1 for 2 for the Timberwolves.

Four of the first-inning walks went to a full count, MWP coach Lee Metcalf said. “We just had trouble closing it out. … We struggled tonight throwing the ball.”

The defense, he added, was solid, notching a double play during the loss.

Morton-White Pass (1-1) hosts Toutle Lake on Tuesday in Morton.

Tigers Put Away Mossyrock in Five

MOSSYROCK — Garret Shannon and Dawson Stanley combined to drive in nine runs as Napavine beat Mossyrock, 12-2, in a five-inning C2BL baseball game here Friday.

Shannon went 3 for 4 with a triple and five RBIs, while Stanley was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs.

Tristan Ellison went 2 for 2 and scored a pair of runs for the Tigers. Ben Woodrum started on the mound and didn’t give up a hit in two innings, though he walked four to allow to earned runs. Laythan Demarest tossed the final three frames, striking out three without giving up a run.

Kord Senter went 1 for 2 with an RBI for Mossyrock. Justin Gootgeld had a double and Nick Fried also had a hit.

Fried started on the mound for Mossyrock and struck out two batters.

“We were one play away from getting out of those two big innings. That was the difference in the game. Give Napavine credit, they came up with three timely hits,” Mossyrock coach Jay Henderson said. “We walked a few after that when the fifth inning got away from us. Two of those no error plays cost us five runs. When you have unearned runs, that makes a difference.”

Mossyrock (0-2) hosts Rainier — with the Mountaineers as the home team — on Tuesday. Napavine (3-1, 2-0 league) hosts Wahkiakum on Tuesday.

Miscues Cost Loggers in Loss to Kalama

KALAMA — Onalaska got a solid pitching performance out of Matt Kurzeika, but six errors cose the Loggers in a 7-3 loss to Kalama here Friday in C2BL baseball action.

Kurzeika worked five innings without walking a batter and allowed three earned runs with two strikeouts, and went 2 for 3 at the plate to help his own cause.

Kyle Trulson added a double and two RBIs for the Loggers, and Danny Dalsted singled and played well defensively at second base, Onalaska coach Rocky Stanley said.

“We had a couple innings where we had to get five or six outs, and that doesn’t work in this league,” Stanley said. “We show we can play good, and then we show that we can boot it around.”

Onalaska (0-2) hosts Winlock on Tuesday.
