Saturday Roundup: District Softball, Regional Baseball

Posted

A lot of stuff went down today in the Lewis County sports world. Here’s a quick recap, before we start filing stories.

BASEBALL

It was regional baseball Saturday, with six local teams playing for a spot in their respective four-team state tournament.

2As: Centralia, at the 2A level, beat Archbishop Murphy, 6-5, in their regional opener behind a six-inning effort from pitcher Christian Peters. Jake Sutton tossed a complete game in the regional finals, as the Tigers beat No. 2-ranked Fife, 10-4, to secure a spot in the state’s final four in Yakima and Centralia’s most successful season since its 1993 state championship. Peters and Mitch Halbleib each had three hits, with Gavin Kerner and Jacob Monohon each knocking two hits. Centralia (17-7) will play Liberty, out of Issaquah, at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Yakima’s County Stadium.

2Bs: Adna and Toledo each won regional finals against an in-league opponent to make the State 2B Baseball Tournament — with Adna returning for the third-straight year, and Toledo making the final four for the first time since the Indians took third in 2001.

Toledo beat Wilbur-Creston, 10-3, on Saturday morning, while Pe Ell-Willapa Valley held off Life Christian, 8-7, in the other Mossyrock regional game. Toledo then topped PWV, 6-2, behind a six-inning, five-hit, six-strikeout pitching performance from Wes Kuzminsky, who also went 3 for 4 at the plate.

In Anacortes, meanwhile, Napavine knocked off Liberty Bell, 8-1, and Adna beat La Conner 7-5 to set up another all-Central 2B League regional final. The Pirates, which lost two games to Napavine in the regular season and one in the district tournament, won when it mattered most, beating the Tigers 6-1 to end Napavine’s season and advance back to the state tournament.

Adna will face defending champion DeSales at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Centralia’s Ed Wheeler Field. Toledo will take on Colfax at 7 p.m. at Wheeler, with the third/fourth place game set for 10 a.m. on Saturday and the championship to be played at 1 p.m.

1Bs: Oakville beat Shoreline Christian 4-3 on Saturday morning, but lost to Pomeroy, 14-4, in the state semifinals. Pomeroy will take on Riverside Christian at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the State 1B championship game.

SOFTBALL

Adna avenged a pair of losses to Toutle Lake in the regular season and hammered the Ducks, 10-1, on Saturday in the championship game of the District 4 2B Softball Tournament.

In consolation action, Napavine beat Morton-White Pass, 14-0, and Pe Ell-Willapa Valley beat Onalaska, 16-1, in the consolation semifinals. Napavine then dropped PWV, 12-2, in the third/fourth place game, while Morton-White Pass got a 2-run homer from Taylor Brooks in the bottom of the eighth inning to give MWP an 8-6 win and the fifth and final spot in the State 2B Softball Tournament. The state tourney starts Friday morning at Yakima’s Gateway Softball Complex.
