1A Softball: Barnes’ Arm, Grand Slam Helps Power Loggers Past Tenino

TENINO — They lasted four innings in the first game, and five in the second.

The host Beavers were bombarded by Onalaska here Thursday night in SWW 1A League Evergreen Division softball action, allowing a 10-run inning in the first game and 9 runs over the final two of Game 2, falling 18-0 and 12-3, respectively.

“Onalaska’s a great hitting team with great pitchers,” Beaver coach Wanda Blanksma said. “Every inning (of Game 2) we had runners in scoring position but just couldn’t get the timely hit.

“A lot of that has to do with their pitchers.”

Tenino’s pitching wasn’t quite up to speed, as they doled out 15 bases on balls over those nine innings of play, which — in the third inning of Game 1 — set up Logger ace and slugger Sarah Barnes to notch a grand slam.

“It was just a combination of walks,” Blanksma said. “We had one critical error way before (the grand slam) that would’ve gotten us out of the inning.”

The Beavers, in position to be shut-out for the second time on the day, put 3 runs on the board in the fifth inning of Game 2. But the Loggers, however, returned fire with 2 runs in the bottom of that inning to put the game away.

“I was pleased with the girls,” Blanksma said. “They could’ve rolled over. They continued to play real hard tonight and that was a real positive for us not to give up.

    “They just kept fighting.”

Blanksma commended the play of catcher Cassie Vance, who did a great job behind the plate, she said.

Tenino (1-5, 1-3 league) plays a doubleheader at Pe Ell on April 6 at 3 p.m.
