1B Boys: Acorns Bow Out of State Tournament With Loss to Lopez

YAKIMA — The senior-laden Oakville Acorns concluded their State 1B Boys Basketball Tournament with a 62-50 loss to Lopez Island here Thursday night.

There was no hardware in store for the Grays Harbor County boys, and it was the third time in four years they’ve headed home after just two games.

“We’re disappointed,” Acorn coach Steve Reinitz said. “We went over and went two and out. We been there before and done that before.

“When you’re loaded with seniors, it hurts to see that many kids head out the door.”

Out the door, in order of offensive contribution in Thursday night’s game, will be Kodi Berentsen (13 points), Tucker Reinitz (10), Bryan Witt and Rikki Sutterlict (8 apiece), and Rhyse Pettit (3).

Junior Bobby Jones chipped in with 8 points, and Berentsen also completed a double-double with 12 rebounds.

    “Kodi played big,” Reinitz said.

Oakville was outscored just 16-14 in the first frame, before Lopez Island outscored the Acorns 34-20 in the second and third.

In the fourth quarter, the Acorns brought a 15-point deficit down to 8 with 2 minutes remaining. But as time narrowed down, they had to begin fouling, and Lopez shot a dismal 8 of 21 from the charity stripe.

The Lobos outrebounded the Acorns 43-33.

“They shot a lot better,” said Reinitz, whose team shot 20 of 49 from the field. “The difference in rebounds was on offensive rebounds. We got 12 and they got 23.

“They got a lot of second chance points. And man for man, they were a little big bigger than us inside.”

Reinitz estimated that his team had over 20 turnovers.

“We didn’t play badly,” he said, “we just didn’t play good enough to win.”

Lopez now plays Pateros for a chance to get into the 5th/8th place game.
